Background
The Department of Justice and Community Safety (Youth Justice) is responsible for the statutory supervision of young people in the criminal justice system in Victoria focusing on prevention, diversion, and early intervention. As an area within the department, Youth Justice is committed to the demonstration of departmental values: serve the community, work together, act with integrity, respect other people and make it happen.
Youth justice custodial centres accommodate young people aged 12-18 years who have been remanded or sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Children's Court, and some 18-21 year olds sentenced by Adult Courts to a youth justice custodial centre.
Precincts
* Parkville Youth Justice Precinct – inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville, approximately five kilometres from the central business district.
* Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct (CCYJP) – located to the west of Werribee.
* Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct – located approximately 100 kilometres north of Melbourne.
Opportunity
* Ongoing, full-time position based at any of the Youth Justice Precincts (Malmsbury, Parkville & Cherry Creek) but working flexibly across all Youth Justice Custodial Precincts where needed to respond to operational requirements.
* VPS4 role: $97,955 - $111,142 per year plus super.
* Build professional relationships with often complex young people, through ongoing contact and support to enhance continuity and consistency for the young person, using an evidence-based case management process.
* Provide authoritative support to coach and advise key workers so they can motivate and encourage young people towards achieving their case plan goals.
* Collaborate with unit-based staff, using negotiation and persuasive skills where required, to support them to embrace their important role in the case management framework and ensure the delivery of high-quality case management services for young people in custody.
* As part of the classification and placement unit, apply sound, specialist knowledge and expertise to ensure custodial placement decisions consider the individual risks and complex needs of young people.
* Work in close partnership with the Youth Justice community case manager, contributing to care teams and providing specialist, timely and accurate advice about the young person's progress in custody.
* Liaise and negotiate with relevant service providers and government/non-government agencies to ensure the provision of relevant and coordinated services to young people in custody and as part of their transitional planning.
Success Factors
* Demonstrated experience in effectively applying theory, knowledge, and experience in undertaking specialised assessments and implementing, reviewing and monitoring case plans, strategies and programs.
* An understanding of risks and protective factors which impact on offending behaviour and the capacity to successfully implement service plans aimed at reducing offending behaviour.
* Current full driver's licence is required as travel to other offices within the department is required.
* Successful completion of department-provided training in the application of evidence-based assessment tools will be required after commencing the role.
Working with Children Check (WWCC) – required to be maintained for the period of employment.
