Your new role
The Fund is experiencing significant growth and is expanding its investment capabilities of its global offices in London and New York. With the growth of the investment team and activities in New York and United States more generally, the New York-based tax team plays a vital function supporting them with their deals and transactions. To service this growth and increased activity, the Fund is seeking to expand its Investments Tax support in New York. We are searching for a Tax Manager to build and grow our Investments Tax function, supporting the Infrastructure, Private Credit, and Property teams on new investments, asset management, as well as the Fund's wider strategic tax initiatives.
The Team
The Investment Tax team has responsibility within the Finance Domain to consider application of relevant tax rules and principles to maximise retirement outcomes for our members and to ensure that investment decisions are made on a tax informed basis. With our growing focus on capital deployment into the US, it will be an exciting challenge for a tax professional who has a passion for M&A Tax matters across investments classes, looking for a hands-on role with a great mix of responsibility and autonomous working, all while being part of a dynamic team in an international environment.
This role reports into our NY-based Senior Manager, Investments Tax and works closely with the wider tax team in Australia to manage the US investment tax structuring process for prospective investments, supporting ongoing asset management and associated tax risks, assisting with the development of strategic initiatives for the investments department and maintaining relations with the Fund's advisors, peers and with relevant government authorities. We are seeking a candidate who is excited to be part of a global organization that prides itself on collaboration across cultures and time zones.
You will be exposed to professionals across all of our Investment Asset classes, as well as other functions required to support the Fund’s member-focused mandate, giving you the chance to build broad relationships, gain a deeper understanding of how each of these areas operate and get involved in activities to advance the Fund’s mandate outside of your immediate role or team. Accordingly, the role will involve substantial interaction with the Investments Department, particularly the Private Equity, Private Credit, and Real Asset teams; Group Tax; and Investments Legal.
Key Responsibilities
Investment Management
* Play a significant role as part of the deal team through all stages of a new investment, including:
o Managing the tax due diligence and structuring processes for US inbound investments (both direct and indirect) at acquisition and disposal.
o Working closely with the internal and external third parties; advisors, portfolio managers, co-investors, and relevant tax authorities and Group Tax to identify preferred upstream structure.
o Collaborate with Investments Legal to ensure transaction documentation achieves the intended tax outcomes of the structure identified and appropriately mitigates tax risk to the Fund.
* Ensure transactions comply with the relevant tax law and meet all requirements of the Fund's tax risk policies.
* Work collaboratively with the Fund's stakeholders, ensuring all tax issues covering the whole of investment life cycle are identified and communicated to all affected parties for optimal implementation.
* Support with post-acquisition asset management and provide relevant guidance, where required, to Group Tax, portfolio managers, and governance and operations teams.
* Help the internal Investment Managers on day-to-day queries on US investments and potential investments.
Strategic Planning and Enterprise Support
* Assist with planning for the Fund's US investment tax strategy, including identification of preferred. models/structures for acquiring, holding, and disposing of direct and indirect investments.
* Support Enterprise Tax and Portfolio Tax with Group Tax initiatives and projects relevant to the Fund’s tax status and claims of preferential treatment, reporting obligations and implementation of new legislation.
* Engage in the selection of external tax advisers, assess adviser performance, and determine the optimal service model for each investment (from a tax perspective) in consultation with colleagues.
* Engage in tax research and consideration of tax law developments relevant to the Fund and its investment activities.
* Advance the capabilities and efficiencies of the Group Tax function taking into consideration ongoing operational and technological developments vis-à-vis the Fund’s strategic objectives.
What we’re looking for
Culture is key at AustralianSuper, and we are looking for someone who is a team player that enjoys working in a high performing collaborative team.
The ideal candidate is a dynamic individual with a significant career to date within the M&A and/or advisory space in an investment tax capacity with approximately four to six years of experience at a reputable accounting or law firm. That candidate would enjoy engaging with a range of different stakeholders and thrive in a hands-on environment. Specific qualifications include:
* Relevant degree or equivalent in accounting disciplines or tax law (e.g., CPA, JD/LLM)
* Strong experience within the M&A transaction space and/or within the relevant real asset investment space (property or infrastructure investments, etc.).
* Experience managing tax diligence and structuring of cross-border private market transactions with a clear understanding of the deal process and asset management lifecycle from either a professional services, institutional investor, or funds management environment.
* Advanced understanding of taxation legislation in relation to investment markets and financial products.
* Advanced analytical skills and high-level attention to detail mindset.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to present arguments in written and verbal format to a variety of audiences.
* Ability to form strong working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and across different cultural, geographical and cultural backgrounds.
* Understanding of accounting and taxation principles.
* Self-starter and comfortable working in a small team and taking a hands-on approach to project management and execution.
* Knowledge of Australian superannuation funds’ taxation requirements.
* Microsoft excel proficiency.
* Experience with financial and tax models, undertaking analysis of financial information, and scenario modelling.
Pay transparency notice
The compensation range for this position is $210,000 to $260,000 (this is based on full-time hours, located in New York City). The pay offered may vary depending on job related knowledge, skills, and experience and refers to the amount AustralianSuper is willing to pay at the time of posting.
