With a population of over 88,000 in the urban area it is one of the fastest growing places in New South Wales. Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a 228 bed level five facility with a 24-hour Emergency Department and a range of specialist services, including intensive care, anaesthetics, cardiology, stroke, respiratory, paediatrics, obstetrics, general medicine, orthopaedics, urology, vascular, general surgery, gastroenterology, oncology, ophthalmology and mental health. This regional hospital has seen a huge growth in presentations and now sees 50,000 per year, with 25% paediatrics, fast track area and short stay unit. The Base Hospital is the main referral centre for the Mid North Coast and is a regional trauma centre. It is also affiliated with the University of New South Wales rural clinical medical school co-located on the hospital campus and Charles Sturt University.

Kempsey District Hospital is a rural hospital 45 minutes from Port Macquarie. It has approximately 30,000 presentations per year (25% paediatrics and 25% indigenous), There is on site medical wards, maternity services, rehab, surgery and mental health. Some patients will be referred to port Macquarie Base Hospital for specialty inpatient care. We strive to deliver a high level of consultant-led care to both our Emergency departments in the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network regardless of the location.

There are daily opportunities for procedural skills improvement with 30 supportive Emergency Specialists (FACEMs), who are committed to your development and wellbeing. What you'll be doing


Provision of a consistent generalist medical service to patients, coordination of clinical management of patients consistent with the plans of the Admitting Medical Officer and improvement in the continuity of care within name of service or facility and between the hospital and community.
NSW Rural General Practitioner Procedural Training Program with Mid North Coast Local Health District offers fellowed General Practitioners flexible Advanced Skills Training opportunities in Anaesthetics, Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care and Paediatrics in the Hastings Macleay and Coffs Clinical Networks.
This program is available to all Fellowed General Practitioners wanting to acquire or maintain procedural skills for use in rural NSW. It is recognised that General Practitioners undertaking procedural training are most likely to have established practices therefore training may be flexible to allow continuation of part time work in the practice. The procedural training specialty should be appropriate to the service needs of the rural community in which they intend to practice. Recruitment will be focused on GPs proposing to take up rural practice who are residing in or are prepared to reside and practice as a General Practitioner in rural NSW.
The General Practice Procedural Trainee will be engaged as a Senior Registrar under the Public Hospital Medical Officers (State) Award 2022 with a salary of $150,475 per annum. The Trainees will receive an allowance to increase total remuneration to the level of Staff Specialist Level 1, Year 5 as per the Staff Specialists (State) Award 2022, in line with Award increases.

* Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners and / or Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine
* High level skills and involvement in clinical care, supervision, mentoring and teaching. Able to exercise a moderate degree of professional independence.
* Demonstrated skills in and commitment to improvements in clinical care, patient safety and risk management processes, including the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams to achieve change.
* High level interpersonal communication and team skills
* Effective communication skills for working within health care organisations and the outside community, including capacity to use electronic communications (e.g. electronic records) effectively.
* Evidence of participation in continuing professional development and commitment to the broader service objectives of the public health system, including the effective utilisation of resources, and participation in activities beyond direct patient care
* Demonstrated commitment to practicing medicine and advanced skill in a regional or rural setting in New South Wales
