A new era of mental health care is arriving in the New England North West region in 2026.

The purpose-built Tamworth Mental Health Unit will feature 37 inpatient beds, including general adult, high acuity, youth and older persons streams. Designed to prioritise recovery, safety and therapeutic engagement, the unit will deliver holistic, person-centred care through a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

Consumers will benefit from integrated medical, psychological, occupational and social supports, alongside a structured daily therapeutic program focused on building skills, connection and overall wellbeing.

This is a unique opportunity to join a brand-new service and play a key role in shaping its culture, model of care and long-term impact from the ground up.
About the role

As a Psychologist, you will provide comprehensive assessment and evidence-based psychological interventions to consumers admitted to the unit.

You will work across a broad range of presentations, including mood and anxiety disorders, as well as more complex conditions such as psychosis, bipolar disorder and personality disorders.

Key responsibilities include:

* Delivering advanced psychological assessments and formulations
* Facilitating individual and group-based interventions
* Contributing to multidisciplinary care planning
* Providing psychoeducation to consumers and families
* Supporting recovery-focused discharge planning and transition to community care

You will receive support from your Line Manager and Psychology Professional Lead, with access to clinical supervision, ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
About you

You are an experienced and adaptable clinician who thrives in a fast-paced inpatient setting. You bring:

* Strong assessment and formulation skills
* Experience delivering evidence-based therapies such as CBT, DBT and ACT
* Confidence in risk assessment, suicide prevention and de-escalation
* The ability to quickly build therapeutic rapport in high-acuity environments
* Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to multidisciplinary care

You practice with cultural humility, professionalism and strong ethical standards. You are resilient, reflective and committed to maintaining your own wellbeing in demanding clinical environments.

Above all, you are person-centred and recovery-oriented, with a strong commitment to trauma-informed care, family engagement and achieving meaningful outcomes for consumers.
Requirements:

* Current registration as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
* Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited postgraduate clinical psychology qualification of no less than two years full time duration or recognised equivalent, displayed on the Psychology Board of Australia website.

Additional information:
* An eligibility list will be created for future permanent part time and temporary part time vacancies.
* To be eligible for permanent employment in this position you must be an Australian Citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia, or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport. Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable local candidate is identified for the position; in this instance, you may only be offered employment in line with the conditions and expiry date of your visa.
