Position overview

Reporting to the Manager, Satellite & Space Weather Networks, this position provides specialised technical support for the Bureau's integrated observing systems, which include satellite ground stations and terrestrial space weather instruments. These systems are critical to the Bureau's ability to deliver accurate and timely forecasting, numerical weather prediction, and space weather services.

The Technical Officer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and sustainment of complex infrastructure across a range of technologies, including radio frequency systems, telemetry networks, and environmental sensors. The role involves conducting preventative and corrective maintenance, performing configuration audits, and contributing to the development and upkeep of technical documentation, maintenance records in the Bureau's Asset Management System.

The position also provides technical input to equipment upgrade and renewal projects, supporting the delivery of minor project activities and contributing to technical reviews. Additionally, the role participates in an on-call roster for after-hours technical support and may provide backfill support to other technical officers within the team.

Role responsibilities

The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

Provide specialist technical support for space weather and satellite observing equipment, including installation, preventive maintenance, repairs and configuration audits.

Investigate and report on equipment technical performance. Identify trends or issues, provide specialist advice regarding performance improvement and quality assurance.

Undertake development, evaluation and implementation of hardware and software solutions and for current and future capabilities. Prepare specifications and technical reports and participate in tender technical evaluations.

Provide technical support for equipment upgrade and renewal projects. Contribute to technical reviews for projects and Requests for Information from third parties.

Contribute to the upkeep of technical and support documentation, spares and support equipment for the network. Contribute to minor network administration tasks.

Participate in on-call roster for after-hours technical support. Perform other general duties for network support as required.

Participate in safety management activities including equipment risk assessments and safety working groups.

Provide supervision to other staff and contractors performing maintenance or support activities, including remote supervision.

Comply with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others.

Qualifications:

An engineering diploma or comparable qualifications in a technical field (electronics or telecommunications or similar years in technical/engineering experience OR other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties.

Merit pool

The selection process will establish a merit pool that may be used to fill similar positions within 18 months.
