Join a growing team with a genuine impact on preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
The Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) is a specialist office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that contributes directly to Australia's foreign, security and regulatory priorities. We have built a reputation for non-proliferation excellence over 50 years of effective treaty implementation, robust domestic regulation and support for regional partners.
Australia's nuclear security environment is evolving — new technologies, emerging cyber threats and shifting international expectations demand experienced leaders who can make high-consequence decisions with confidence. In these roles, you will provide authoritative regulatory advice, lead complex compliance activities and represent Australia on the international stage.
The Opportunity:
We are recruiting at both the EL1 (Assistant Director, Nuclear Security) and EL2 (Director, Nuclear Security) levels. Both roles are critical to ensuring Australia's nuclear security settings are appropriate, timely and defensible — from physical protection and cyber security through to threat assessment and international engagement. We are particularly interested in professionals with specialist expertise in threat, cyber and computer security as ASNO strengthens Australia's resilience to evolving nuclear security threats.
The roles differ in seniority and scope — EL2 Directors provide strategic leadership and authoritative advice to the Director General and SES, while EL1 Assistant Directors lead complex regulatory processes and deliver specialist technical advice with limited direction.
The Role:
Your key duties may include:
* Providing authoritative technical and regulatory advice to permit holders, whole-of-government counterparts and international partners
* Analysing complex threat, cyber and risk information to inform regulatory decisions and policy development
* Leading or supporting nuclear security inspections and compliance activities, including physical protection and cyber security assessments
* Representing ASNO at domestic and international forums, including with the IAEA and regional partners
* Preparing and delivering high-quality technical briefs, inspection reports and correspondence for senior decision-makers
Our Ideal Candidate:
At ASNO, we value people who are motivated by purpose, comfortable in a highly specialised environment, and bring curiosity to complex and evolving challenges. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful and high-performing workplace and support staff through targeted training and development.
You will also have the following skills and capabilities:
* Demonstrated experience in nuclear security, cyber security, national security or a related regulatory or policy field
* Sound professional judgement when handling sensitive, high-consequence or confidential information
* Strong analytical and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical information clearly to senior decision-makers
* Demonstrated stakeholder management experience across government, industry and international partners
* Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality outcomes under pressure
We recognise that candidates may not meet every capability listed and encourage applications from people who can demonstrate transferable skills, potential and a willingness to learn.
