TEMP 12month position: A great opportunity to contribute to Queensland's agricultural future

Your new company

You will be joining a respected government organisation within the agricultural sector, dedicated to strengthening the productivity, profitability and sustainability of Queensland's primary industries. The sector plays a critical role in supporting agricultural businesses, regional communities and natural resource management through evidence‑based insights, industry collaboration and long‑term strategic development. This team works across a broad mix of cropping, sugarcane, livestock and natural resource systems, delivering high‑impact economic analysis and programs that help producers and industries thrive.

Your new role

As an PO3/PO4 Agricultural Economist, you will evaluate the economic impact of management practice changes in sugarcane and cropping systems, guiding better farm decisions, enhanced environmental outcomes, and sustainable industry growth.

In this role, you will:
- Conduct economic, financial and bio‑economic modelling across agricultural production and natural resource management systems.
- Develop, apply and train stakeholders in economic decision‑support tools (e.g. FEAT Online).
- Analyse data using scientific and digital tools to produce timely, high‑quality reports.
- Build strong collaborative relationships with landholders, industry groups, researchers, organisations and government partners.
- Provide expert economic advice to support improved service delivery, farm management and industry outcomes.
- Lead project delivery and clearly communicate findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Support the development of new projects focused on productivity, competitiveness and sustainability in Queensland agriculture.

What you'll need to succeed

You will bring strong analytical capability, clear communication skills, and a commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural systems. To succeed in this role, you will need a bachelor‑level qualification in Economics, Agriculture, Business, Agribusiness or a related field, along with experience in economic, financial or bio‑economic modelling.
You will be confident translating technical information into practical insights, hold a current C Class driving licence, and be willing to travel regularly to regional areas, including overnight. Experience with primary producers or agricultural industries, and an understanding of systems such as sugarcane, grains, horticulture or broader farming, will be highly regarded.

What you'll get in return

This 12‑month temporary appointment, based in Cairns, offers an hourly rate of PO3/PO4: $66.94 to $77.47, depending on experience. In this role, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to Queensland's agricultural sector by helping drive improved industry profitability and environmental sustainability. You will join a supportive and flexible work environment that values purpose, service and professional growth. The position provides opportunities to build your leadership capability, contribute to complex and impactful projects, and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. You will also be part of a diverse team dedicated to strengthening rural communities and agricultural industries across the state.
