Position Overview
The Team Leader for Weather, Marine and Climate Models will lead a high-performing team responsible for operational software development and transitioning research to operations across numerical prediction models. This role ensures resilient operations, drives continuous improvement and maximises the impact and value of modelling systems for Bureau weather, marine and climate services.
You will:
* Provide strategic leadership and technical oversight for model development and operational systems.
* Manage pre-operational trials, performance monitoring, and lifecycle management of modelling systems.
* Foster collaboration across internal and external stakeholders to deliver timely and efficient processes.
* Champion continuous improvement through test driven development and by integrating cutting-edge science and technology into operational frameworks.
Role responsibilities
The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
1. Lead and manage the Weather, Marine and Climate Models team, ensuring delivery of operational and strategic objectives.
2. Oversee design, development and maintenance of operational modelling systems with high standards of resilience and accountability. Most of these systems are supported 24/7 and utilise High Performance Computing (HPC) and complex underpinning infrastructure.
3. Drive continuous improvement in system performance through documenting current processes, identifying and closing any process gaps, targeting efficiency gains, reducing system complexity, consolidating and unifying disparate methods and models, and science integration.
4. Foster a collaborative culture with teams and colleague across the Bureau: within the Data and Digital, Community Services, Business Solutions and Science and Innovation Groups.
5. Communicate clearly with a range of stakeholders with varying levels of technical and scientific knowledge by translating information for others and focussing on key points and using appropriate unambiguous language.
6. Contribute to organisational governance, representing the team in regular project and program management forums, contributing to project and program planning, delivery and reporting.
7. Comply with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
