Introduction
The Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator (ANNPSR) is seeking dynamic senior executives to drive our organisation forward. Our objective is clear: to protect the environment and people by providing independent assurance for nuclear safety of Australia’s Nuclear-Powered Submarine Program, while supporting Australia’s Defence interests and the AUKUS partnership.
As part of the Senior Leadership Group, you will play a key role in promoting and influencing a shared commitment to the strategic direction of ANPSSR.

The Role
The ANNPSR is seeking a highly qualified and experienced senior legal practitioner to fill the role of General Counsel. The role is responsible for the provision of legal advice, including on matters related to litigation and legislative creation, and support on a range of issues related to the ongoing maturity and operation of the ANNPSR, including its functions as an independent Defence nuclear regulator. The General Counsel is also part of the ANNPSR senior executive and is expected to play a broad leadership role within the Agency and beyond into the AUKUS Nuclear-Powered Submarine Program with stakeholders, peer and co-regulators, and other state and federal government entities. The General Counsel will work with staff across the ANNPSR to provide high-level legal advice on major, complex and sensitive issues arising from the operation of the ANNPSR which may include administrative law, litigation, legislation, and legal policy.
The successful candidate will be required to have knowledge, skills and advanced professional expertise as a senior legal practitioner, as well as demonstrable experience in the application of law in a regulatory and government agency setting at a senior legal practitioner level. A proven understanding of the relevant environmental factors affecting the operation and effectiveness of a regulatory agency, the relationship between complex issues and a sound grasp of Commonwealth frameworks, such as procurement, financial, employment and security, are all significant. The occupant of the role must have high level relationship management, influencing and negotiation skills, with strong leadership ability.
