Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the Staff Specialist position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital.
Westmead Hospital is looking for a Deputy Director of Medical Services (DDMS) to provide strong inclusive, contemporary, and professional medical leadership, promoting the vision, and strategic objectives of both the Hospital and Local Health District.
The Deputy Director Medical Services (DDMS) works collaboratively with the Director Medical Services and the Junior Medical Workforce Planning and Operations Manager to provide effective operational management of the junior and non-specialist medical workforce; assist in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives to recruit, retain and support medical practitioners; enhance medical workforce engagement; and strategically position Westmead hospital as employer of choice for medical practitioners. The DDMS is a member of the Westmead Hospital Senior Leadership Team.
The DDMS provides professional medical leadership (particularly in the development of new and enhanced clinical services and models of care). This involves working with clinical staff to strengthen involvement in decision-making, professional leadership and coordination of medical services for the hospital, with professional assistance to Department Heads in fulfilling their respective operational portfolio responsibilities.
The DDMS will have strong interpersonal skills, using these to guide Westmead Hospital's clinical community to achieve excellent results.

The position reports to the Director Medical Services. The position is for an initial period of 3 years with the option of extension based on performance and ongoing organisational need.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Selection Criteria
* Possess current registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
* Demonstrated skills and experience within a complex hospital and health care environment, with understanding of the context of clinical service delivery within the Australian Health system.
* Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including support of medical education and training, teaching and supervision, and familiarity with basic, applied, or clinical research.
* Demonstrated experience and understanding of contemporary issues in medical workforce management, including credentialing, definition of scope of practice, training and education of medical staff, maintenance of professional standards and the management of junior medical staff.
* Demonstrated leadership and change management skills in supporting the development and implementation of new and enhanced clinical services and/or models of care.
* Strong relationship building capabilities, conflict management and influencing skills with the ability to communicate, motivate, consult, and negotiate with senior executives, Senior and Junior Medical Practitioners, hospital staff and diverse stakeholder groups including consumers
* Well-developed capacity to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively in a team environment and as a member of an Executive Team, with an understanding of and ability to work with committees.
