The NSW Reconstruction Authority (RA) is seeking an Executive Director, Disaster Risk Reduction to provide strategic leadership in understanding, quantifying, managing and communicating natural hazard disaster risk across New South Wales. As a key member of the RA Executive Leadership Team, the role leads high‐profile initiatives that embed data‐driven insights, integrated mitigation and climate adaptation solutions into government decision making.
The role drives the delivery of the State Disaster Mitigation Plan, oversees the implementation of Disaster Adaptation Plans across NSW, and applies statutory planning powers and cross‐government coordination to strengthen community resilience, economic sustainability and long‐term disaster preparedness. Operating in a complex and politically sensitive environment, this executive role advises ministers and senior leaders while influencing reform across land use planning, infrastructure investment and risk‐based decision making.
The Executive Director, Disaster Risk Reduction is accountable for
* Providing strategic leadership for disaster risk reduction across New South Wales, shaping policy, investment and reform to strengthen long‐term resilience
* Leading the delivery of flagship state‐wide initiatives, including the State Disaster Mitigation Plan and Disaster Adaptation Plans, embedding data driven and place‐based approaches
* Influencing whole‐of‐government decision making by providing trusted executive advice to senior leaders and Ministers on complex risk, planning and investment issues
* Building and leading a state‐wide disaster risk data and insights capability to inform evidence‐based mitigation, adaptation and infrastructure investment
* Driving collaboration across government, industry and communities, negotiating with senior stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes
* Leading and inspiring high performing teams and partnerships to deliver integrated, system‐wide solutions to reduce disaster risk
We are looking for an executive who
* Brings extensive knowledge and experience in natural hazard risk reduction policy, programs and reform, including the management of politically sensitive and complex issues
* Has proven experience designing, leading and delivering climate change adaptation and/or disaster adaptation planning at scale
* Demonstrates exceptional strategic leadership in complex governance environments with multiple sources of authority and competing interests
* Has a strong record of leading high level negotiations and consultations to resolve complex issues and integrate diverse data, evidence and perspectives
* Exhibits sound judgement, resilience and the ability to achieve progress while maintaining long‐term strategic outcomes and required standards
* Leads with integrity and collaboration, modelling executive leadership behaviours and developing high performing, multidisciplinary teams
* Tertiary qualifications in emergency management, risk management, climate and hazard risk, planning and/or development, or a related discipline

The NSW Reconstruction Authority is a statutory corporation that will improve how NSW plans for disasters and ensure that we recover from them faster.
