Senior Protection Engineer
Location: Canberra, ACT Hybrid (3 days onsite, 2 days remote)

The Protection Engineering team is small and highly specialised, offering broad exposure across the business and opportunities to work on cutting-edge technologies such as IEC 61850 digital substations.
Your new role
As a Senior Protection Engineer, you will be a key member of the Zone Assets team within the Network Services division. Reporting to the Principal Power Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle management of protection assets, including design, testing, maintenance, and performance analysis. You'll lead protection grading studies across HV and LV networks and contribute to strategic asset planning and project delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
* Developing protection system designs, relay settings, and commissioning plans
* Performing fault analysis, root cause investigations, and system incident reporting
* Supporting embedded generation connections and liaising with AEMO
* Leading network protection grading studies and producing technical documentation
* Advising on safety issues including arc flash and earthing
* Supporting field teams with technical testing and troubleshooting
* Contributing to standards development and continuous improvement initiatives
What you'll need to succeed
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering
* ACT Professional Engineering Registration (or ability to obtain)
* Strong experience in HV/LV protection systems and relay design
* Proficiency in power system software and protection grading studies
* Familiarity with Omicron/Doble test sets and IEC 61850 technologies
* Knowledge of embedded generation protection requirements
* Understanding of arc flash safety and earthing principles
* AusCheck security clearance (or ability to obtain)
