TENNIS COACH

Description
Instruct student-athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical conditioning necessary for individual and team success in tennis. The coach shall also promote sportsmanship, character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment. The coach is expected to continually improve coaching knowledge and skills through clinics, observations, and professional collaboration.
Reports To
The Athletic Director and school administrators, who provide overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the school principal.
Qualifications
Ability to organize, supervise, and administer a comprehensive girls' tennis program.
* Previous successful coaching or playing experience in tennis preferred.
* Demonstrated knowledge of the technical aspects of tennis, including rules, strategies, skill development, and training techniques, with a commitment to continued professional growth.
* Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student-athletes through instruction, behavior, and leadership.
Performance Responsibilities
Program & Policy Responsibilities
* Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Northampton County School Board and ensures proper implementation within the tennis program.
* Maintains knowledge of school division, state, and league regulations and implements them consistently.
* Follows proper administrative lines of authority and refers concerns or grievances through appropriate channels.
Staff Responsibilities
* Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught within the tennis program.
* Provides guidance and support to assistant or volunteer coaches, encouraging professional growth when applicable.
* Maintains discipline and works to promote morale, cooperation, and a positive team culture.
* Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or principal.
Administrative Duties
* Assists the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and coordination of matches, tournaments, and special events.
* Ensures proper preparation of courts and equipment for practices and matches and adheres to scheduled facility use times.
* Completes and submits required documentation related to physical examinations, parental consent, eligibility, and participation.
* Provides safeguards for the care, maintenance, and storage of assigned equipment.
* Recommends program improvements, equipment needs, or procedural changes to the Athletic Director.
Student Responsibilities
* Serves as a mentor to student-athletes, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
* Monitors academic performance and conduct of student-athletes.
* Supervises students during all practices, matches, and while traveling to and from events.
* Communicates team rules, expectations, and sport-specific regulations to participants and parents.
* Implement procedures related to injuries, medical care, and emergencies.
* Complete required injury reports and submit them to the athletic office within required timelines.
* Determines appropriate discipline and communicates with parents when disciplinary action or eligibility concerns arise.
Finance and Equipment
* Participates in budgeting by identifying equipment and supply needs for the upcoming season.
* Is responsible for all assigned equipment, including issuing, inventory, care, and collection of equipment at season's end.
* Ensuring equipment is properly stored, maintained, and used responsibly by student-athletes.
Public Relations
* Organizes and participates in preseason meetings with parents and student-athletes.
* Promotes the tennis program within the school and community in a positive and professional manner.
* Maintains positive relationships with parents, officials, school staff, and the community.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made.
* Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods during practices, matches, and travel.
* Ability to demonstrate tennis-specific skills and movements.
* Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment (generally up to 25–50 pounds).
* Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and squat.
* Ability to project voice and communicate clearly in indoor and outdoor environments.
* Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
* Ability to travel with the team, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight trips.
Terms of Employment
Stipend: Stipend to be established by the School Board in accordance with the Stipend Schedule.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with Northampton County Public Schools supervision procedures.
