Catering Assistant

Mackay Regional Council is seeking enthusiastic and customer-focused Catering Assistants to join our team on a permanent part-time basis (20 hours). In this role you will support the delivery of high-quality catering services at the Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre (MECC) and across external events and venues. This role plays a key part in creating memorable experiences for our clients, guests and community.
Working under general direction, you will contribute to the smooth operation of catering services by delivering consistent service standards with a hands-on, detail-oriented approach. You will support catered functions and retail food and beverage outlets while assisting with administration, coordination and on-the-ground service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in the planning and delivery of catering services for MECC functions and events
* Provide high-quality customer service aligned with MECC Customer Service Standards
* Support the coordination and supervision of food and beverage service during functions
* Assist with event setup and provide hands-on support during peak service periods
* Complete administrative tasks including purchasing, invoicing and stock management through POS systems
* Support kitchen and catering teams to ensure efficient and high-quality service delivery
* Contribute to continuous improvement of catering systems, processes and procedures
* Provide guidance and on-the-job support to staff as required
Essential qualifications and requirements
* Current Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate
* Working with Children Blue Card
* Ability to undertake a Criminal History Check
* Queensland "C" Class Driver Licence (or ability to transfer interstate licence within three months)
Essential experience and skills
* Previous experience in food and beverage preparation and service for functions or events (ideally in a banquet or institutional setting)
* Strong customer service skills with a professional standard of presentation
* Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
* Sound administrative and computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
* Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing environments
Desirable
* Experience supervising staff
* Experience with POS systems, procurement processes or event booking/catering systems
* First Aid Certificate or Warden accreditation
Additional Information
* This role operates on a rostered basis, including evenings and weekends
* The position involves working closely with internal council teams and external clients, contractors and suppliers
