About the role
The Youth Autism Team operates within Mental Health Therapy Services (MHTS), part of Barwon Health's Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol Services (MHDAS). MHTS provides a comprehensive range of psychotherapy, peer support and allied health services across local and area Mental Health and Wellbeing Services (MHWS).
This specialist role supports improved identification, assessment and treatment outcomes for autistic young people aged 12–25 years experiencing mental illness. You will contribute to a best-practice, multidisciplinary autism assessment and diagnostic process alongside a Consultant Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologist and Speech Pathologist, working collaboratively with Community Youth Mental Health teams.
The position delivers discipline-specific occupational therapy expertise within an interprofessional team, supporting high-quality diagnostic and treatment planning processes. Outreach and school-based assessment may be required.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver specialist occupational therapy assessments for autistic young people (12–25 years), contributing to a multidisciplinary diagnostic process.
* Provide evidence-informed recommendations and high-quality reports to guide mental health treatment and support access to appropriate services or funding.
* Offer secondary consultation to MHDAS clinicians regarding autism, sensory and functional needs, and collaborate in responding to clinical risk.
* Engage families and carers in a family-centred approach while meeting service KPIs, documentation standards and professional requirements.
What We Are Looking For
* AHPRA-registered Occupational Therapist with experience in youth mental health and/or autism assessment.
* Strong understanding of autism presentations and co-occurring mental health conditions in young people.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and contribute to consensus-based decision making.
* Excellent assessment, communication and report-writing skills, with a commitment to recovery-oriented and family-centred care.
