The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally protected legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a vital member of the Family Violence Prevention Unit, you will play a meaningful role in supporting solicitors and helping deliver high-quality, culturally safe legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. From researching cases and preparing court documents to assisting with client matters, your work will directly contribute to justice, advocacy, and safer futures every day. Each day, you will:
- Provide high-level paralegal support to solicitors, including research, drafting court documents, and assisting with client interviews.
- Assist solicitors at Court with note-taking, case preparation, and document management.
- Liaise with government, non-government, and community agencies to support client needs.
- Maintain accurate, confidential client files, input data, and perform administrative tasks.
- Work collaboratively with the team to ensure efficient, ethical, and culturally appropriate service delivery.
- Maintain professional competence, stay updated on legal practices, and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a motivated and culturally aware legal professional, committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with respect, integrity, and empathy. You combine strong technical skills with a passion for justice and community impact. Key strengths include:
- Hold formal paralegal qualifications or are currently studying a Law Degree.
- Understanding of contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Knowledge of support and referral services for clients experiencing domestic, family, or family law matters.
- Strong research, problem-solving, and self-motivation skills, able to work independently.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, video-conferencing, and general administrative tasks.
- Desirable: Experience in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community organisations and/or be recognised as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander by the community.
