About the Role
You will be part of the Planning and Environment team within the Legal and Governance branch, providing legal support across multiple Transport for NSW entities. Your responsibilities include managing a diverse range of planning and environmental matters, overseeing end‑to‑end progress, and delivering independent advice to minimise risk and support organisational outcomes. The position is hybrid‑friendly, offering in‑person days at the Elizabeth Street office and remote days.
Responsibilities
* Provide legal support on planning and environment matters, including compulsory acquisition of land, contaminated land, and native title.
* Manage end‑to‑end progress of all planning and environmental law matters.
* Deliver solutions‑focused independent advice to support organisational outcomes and minimise legal risk.
* Collaborate with clients, stakeholders and senior management to drive practical outcomes.
* Mentor and develop junior lawyers within the team.
* Represent the team in the Land and Environment Court and NSW Supreme Court in accordance with NSW Model Litigant Policy.
Qualifications & Experience
* Senior lawyer with practising certificate in NSW.
* 5‑8 years post‑qualification experience in environment and planning law.
* Proficient in legislation: Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Roads Act 1993, Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983, Native Title Act 1993, Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991, Heritage Act 1977.
* Advanced written and verbal communication skills; able to convey legal concepts clearly.
* Experience handling complex matters with multiple stakeholders.
* Strong drafting, negotiation and client‑facing skills.
* Proactive, autonomous and collaborative working style; passion for environment and planning law.
