The Bureau of Meteorology is seeking a dedicated and highly capable professional to fill the role of Defence Operations Support Officer. This position is integral to ensuring the seamless delivery of meteorological services to Defence by providing operational excellence through systems, processes, and innovation initiatives.
The National Security and Space Program sits within the Bureau's Business Solutions Group and is the primary provider of environmental intelligence to national security and space agencies, specifically the Department of Defence and the ADF. Services provided by this Program enhance Australia's national security agenda through the provision of accurate, timely and relevant environmental intelligence, including space weather, meteorological, oceanographic services, and climate data. Services include the provision of forecasts, real-time observations, climatological data, and oceanographic data and services, meteorological training, professional advice to assist decision-making and planning, and direct support to operations and activities.
The Defence Operations Support Officer reports to the Manager Defence and Space Weather Operations (MDSWO) and works closely with the Defence Weather Services (DWS) team, which includes the Meteorological Intelligence Support Team (MIST), supporting ADF operations at Joint Operations Command, and the Military Aviation Defence Weather Services Offices (DWSO), supporting Army and Air Force airbase operations.
The role provides comprehensive support to DWS by maintaining and improving operational documentation, procedures, and rostering frameworks, while coordinating ICT capability enhancements and sustaining forecasting applications. It leverages Bureau enterprise systems and secure platforms to ensure business continuity and resilience in service delivery. The position also contributes to Quality Management System (QMS) processes and ensures compliance with Bureau governance requirements. The position drives innovation and continuous improvement initiatives to modernise practices, enhance operational efficiency, and deliver superior meteorological services to Defence.
The occupant will provide expert advice to the MDSWO on aspects relating to product management, asset management plans, risk management, and business continuity, as they relate to DWS. They will also collate feedback on behalf of the operational team in response to organisational change requests impacting operations.
The position requires strong technical expertise and familiarity with operational forecasting environments, including the use of meteorological systems and an understanding of the end-to-end forecast process. The occupant must demonstrate excellent communication skills to liaise effectively with forecasters and operational teams, while also collaborating across the Bureau with enabling groups such as the Data and Digital Group, Science and Innovation Group, and Enterprise Services Group. The occupant will, at times, be required to liaise with stakeholders within the ADF, therefore knowledge of the Defence chain of command is desirable.
The occupant will manage incidents arising during Defence Weather Service operations, ensure alignment with prescribed plans and policies, and champion innovative practices that strengthen operational resilience and readiness, in accordance with Bureau policies and procedures.
