Are you ready to belong to a agile community where courage, creativity, and optimism are essential elements of our DNA? ECU seeks to lead in educational experience and world-class research by drawing on the legacy and impact of Edith Cowan, a pioneer in education and public service.
Overview
The School of Arts and Humanities (SAH) is one of the largest at ECU, with disciplines organized into clusters: Creative Humanities; Psychology, Counselling, and Criminology; and Social Sciences, Social Work, and Youth Work. The School operates across four campuses and has a strong online presence. In 2026, the Creative Humanities program will operate from the ECU City Campus while continuing to operate at Joondalup and the South-West campuses and developing the ECU Sri Lanka campus.
About the Opportunity
We are seeking two Social Work academics with innovative approaches to teaching and research to join our expanding programs. SAH strengthens its existing courses and research in Social Work, Youth Work, and applied Social Sciences. We launched a Master of Social Work in 2025 and will refresh the Bachelor of Community and Human Services with increased social work content, alongside a Masters in Leading Social Change in 2026. This is a growth phase focused on shaping new courses, advancing social justice research, and preparing the next generation of professionals. Applications from candidates who bring fresh ideas for adapting social work education to evolving needs are welcomed.
The appointment level will reflect experience. We welcome both early-career applicants and those seeking to advance their academic careers.
The Role
If appointed, initial responsibilities will include:
- Teaching units in Social Work, including in the Master of Social Work and social work components of other degrees.
- Supporting field education in collaboration with a senior team of academic and professional staff.
Teaching-Focused Role
If your background aligns most strongly with teaching, you may be appointed to a teaching-focused position, where you will:
- Concentrate on teaching and field education.
- Receive support to develop innovations in pedagogy.
- Play a leading role in preparing and inspiring the next generation of social work professionals.
Teaching and Research Role
If your skills align with a teaching and research position, you will also:
- Build and develop a strong research program, supported by senior colleagues.
- Collaborate with research units such as Program of Research in Migration, Diversity, and Care and the Centre for People, Place, and Planet.
- Access internal research funding schemes to support scholarly work.
Whichever pathway you are appointed to, your career may include:
- Course coordination responsibilities.
- Leadership in broader scholarly life.
- Engagement with external partners to expand the impact of teaching and research.
Selection Criteria
To be considered, you must be eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers. For teaching and research roles, a PhD (or completion within 1 year) is required; for teaching-focused roles, a Masters is required with professional experience equivalent to a PhD.
You should demonstrate, based on past achievement and potential, that you can:
- teach effectively with a student-centred approach;
- engage with industry and community to advance teaching and/or research;
- deliver innovations to improve the scholarly experience for students and colleagues;
- work productively and collegiately to achieve the school and university goals.
If applying to a teaching and research position, demonstrate the ability to conduct high-quality research with public outcomes and supervise students. Desirable experience includes field education, online learning, and international education. Alignment with ECU values of Integrity, Respect, Rational Inquiry, Personal Excellence, and Courage is expected.
Benefits and Application Process
ECU is committed to a positive employment experience with flexible working arrangements, generous leave entitlements, wellbeing initiatives, corporate discounts, and superannuation options.
