The Australia BESS Commissioning Engineer is responsible for overseeing the safe, timely, and high-quality commissioning and delivery of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects in Australia as part of Project Delivery team. As an individual contributor, this role requires a deep understanding of energy storage technologies, technical project management, and hands-on commissioning expertise. The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader who can manage multidisciplinary teams, coordinate across internal and external stakeholders, and ensure the successful handover of fully operational systems.
The Australia BESS Commissioning Engineer reports into the BESS COE group overseas contributing to 2-way sharing and application of lesson learned in global BESS projects and tapping into a global network of experts. Operationally though, is fully integrated in the Australia local team and the day to day activities and project coordination depends on the instructions and planning by the Australia Project Delivery Manager.
Performance evaluation will be decided by consensus of Global BESS Leader and Australia leadership team.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Delivery & Commissioning
* Coordinated by local Project Delivery Manager, leads all aspects of BESS commissioning
* Lead site-based delivery and commissioning of BESS projects from mechanical completion through energization and performance testing.
* Develop, own, and execute detailed commissioning and energization plans, ensuring alignment with contractual obligations with BESS and other providers and project milestones.
* Serve as the site technical lead, providing guidance on system installation, integration, testing, and troubleshooting of PCS, SCADA, EMS, and battery systems.
* Ensure seamless handover of completed systems to O&M teams with clear documentation and stakeholder sign-offs.
Technical Oversight
* Perform technical evaluations and pre-deployment readiness assessments of sites.
* Interface with EPC contractors and OEM suppliers to resolve design and installation issues impacting commissioning.
* Ensure compliance with UL9540(A), NFPA 855, and site-specific grid interconnection requirements during delivery.
* Support system integration for advanced control functionalities, frequency response, and grid services testing.
Safety & Compliance
* Ensure all commissioning activities adhere to HSE regulations, company policies, and site-specific protocols.
* Coordinate with vendors to ensure systems comply with UL9540(A), NFPA 855, NEC, and other applicable standards.
* Prepare and enforce method statements and risk assessments for all commissioning work.

Required Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Energy Engineering, or related technical discipline.
* PMP, PE, or Commissioning-related certifications are a plus.
Experience:
* 5–10 years of experience in energy infrastructure projects, with at least 3 years focused on BESS deployment and commissioning.
* Demonstrated experience managing commissioning for grid-scale energy storage systems.
* Proven track record of delivering projects on schedule and within scope.
* Deep understanding of energy storage system architecture, battery technologies, PCS, SCADA, and interconnection processes.
* Strong knowledge of BESS commissioning methodologies, electrical testing procedures, and control system validation.
* Excellent project scheduling and resource planning skills (MS Project, Primavera P6).
* Effective communicator with the ability to manage cross-functional teams and contractor relationships.
* Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to adapt in high-pressure environments.
* Familiarity with relevant standards: UL 9540A, NFPA 855, IEC, IEEE, NEC, NESC.
Work Conditions:
* Role requires frequent travel to project sites.
* Ability to work extended hours during commissioning windows.
* Must be comfortable working in outdoor or construction environments with proper PPE.
