Casual Technical Officer (Fitter and Machinist) supporting the Central Operations Services business unit ASAP start date with the preferred candidate to be available to work full time hours until June 2026 HEO 6 Step 1 $70.63 per hour plus Superannuation About us We are looking for a skilled Fitter/ Machinist (Technical Officer – Workshops) with experience in machining and/or fabrication workshops to join the University. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative team within the Technical Support Services Workshops portfolio. This team is responsible for delivering excellent client-focused support of teaching and research activities across multiple schools and faculties at the University of Sydney through supporting safe and engaging teaching spaces and utilising industry leading machinery to manufacture research support equipment and across the University’s network of workshops. About the opportunity This role delivers timely and effective technical services within the University of Sydney’s Darlington workshops. This includes provision of hands-on support for practical classes, demonstrations, or research as required, maintenance of equipment and safe working environment, provision of technical advice to users (academic staff/teaching staff/researchers). This role also works closely with agreed designs to manufacture and fabricate custom components, including documenting the detailed specifications and tolerances and sourcing the materials and parts. The role will principally be located in the Darlington Workshops but may be required to assist in other locations across the broader University workshop network. Your key responsibilities will be to: support the agreed delivery of technical services within the Darlington workshops support the implementation of service improvements deliver excellent customer service and support support the effective utilisation of resources within the workshops champion best practices, workplace health & safety, compliance, and risk management lead by example in personal and professional development. About you trade qualifications in Fitting and Machining, with relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and practical experience proven ability to operate machine workshop equipment such as but not limited to Milling Machines, Lathes, Drills, Grinders, MIG and TIG welding machines experience in CAD software (Solidworks) a current licence in the following forklift licence and/or operate elevating work platforms licences experience in ensuring a safe workshop environment through maintaining a high standard of WH&S, including experience in compiling/following risk assessments and safe work procedures ability to establish and maintain working relationships with customers and fellow staff experience in effectively communicating and engaging with clients to understand technical requirements as related to their teaching/research needs experience in supporting HDR and thesis students is desirable. Sponsorship / work rights for Australia Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This role requires valid work rights for Australia.
