Our team
The National Location Information Branch is responsible for delivering national foundation geospatial data, products and services. Our work supports government, industry and the community in areas such as emergency management, infrastructure planning, environmental management and economic development.
The Opportunities
We are looking for skilled and motivated geospatial professionals to help shape how Australia manages and uses national location information. In these roles you will:
* Deliver geospatial data, products and services that support national priorities, often managing multiple projects and deadlines.
* Apply advanced GIS skills, including process automation and quality assurance, to complex spatial datasets using Esri tools (such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and related platforms).
* Lead and mentor multidisciplinary teams, setting priorities and supporting a collaborative, inclusive work environment.
* Coordinate and consult with stakeholders across Geoscience Australia, government and industry to understand requirements and deliver solutions.
* Prepare, review and maintain technical documentation, reports and metadata, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards.

Available roles
Senior Technical Officer, Emergency Management Data Team
(Non-ongoing to 30 June 2026 with possibility of extension or ongoing)
Play a critical role in strengthening Australia's ability to respond to natural disasters and assess their impacts to the people and environment through the delivery of foundation geospatial bushfire data products. You will design and implement advanced geospatial data workflows that deliver timely, reliable and actionable information to support national emergency management planning, relief and recovery. Your work will directly inform decision-making during critical events, through the provision of Australian bushfire geospatial data.
Specific requirements:
* Demonstrated proficiency in Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) Form, FME Flow, cloud-based compute and storage systems (https://e.g., Amazon Web Services (AWS) and MS Azure), PostGIS, and Python.
* Experience with the aggregation and management of complex, high-resolution geospatial datasets.
* Demonstrated experience (or willingness to learn) in maintaining an innovative cloud computing environments for data processing, storage, and delivery.
* Demonstratable expertise in developing web applications and dashboards using Esri tools such as ArcGIS Experience Builder and StoryMaps (ArcGIS Enterprise/Online) would be desirable but not essential.
Senior Geospatial Anaylst, Foundation Vector Data Team
(Non-ongoing to 30 June 2026 with possibility of extension or ongoing)
Lead and support a team to deliver trusted national foundation vector datasets, ensuring data meets user needs. Plan and maintain standardised processes for data aggregation, publishing, quality assurance and working with data custodians to aggregate and manage complex, high-resolution vector datasets.
Specific requirements:
* Demonstrated experience in the creation, aggregation, management and publishing of high-quality geospatial data and insight products, using Esri ArcGIS, FME Form and/or Python.
* Experience in interpretating and applying data use conditions and developing metadata standards for complex geospatial datasets.
Senior Geospatial Data Specialist, Data Coordination Team
(Ongoing)
Play a key role in shaping how Australia's priority national foundation geospatial data requirements are understood and met. Lead the development of the Branch's data governance, management and quality assurance practises that contribute to reliable and sustained data supply pipelines. You will work closely with stakeholders to identify national geospatial data gaps, opportunities and requirements and manage data sharing agreements and contracts. This role would particularly suit a generalist with an eye-for-detail and strong communication skills, with expertise in data/geospatial technologies and/or cloud-based data infrastructure as an advantage but not a requirement.
Specific requirements:
* Demonstrated experience or understanding of data management and governance, including practical knowledge of metadata principles and documentation.
* Understanding of the national geospatial/data landscape is advantageous but not essential.
* Proven capability and/or demonstrated experience to negotiate and administer intergovernmental agreements and commercial data contracts with internal and external stakeholders.
* Experience developing and implementing data governance, management and quality assurance practices for long-term sustainability of geospatial data pipelines.
Senior Geospatial Analyst, Digital Atlas of Australia
(Ongoing)
Join a dynamic team delivering the Digital Atlas of Australia, a national geospatial capability we're delivering on behalf of the Australian Government. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality spatial data and interactive applications that enable users to explore and understand Australia's geography, environment and communities through the Digital Atlas of Australia platform.
Specific requirements:
* Demonstratable expertise in developing web applications and dashboards using Esri tools such as ArcGIS Experience Builder and StoryMaps (ArcGIS Enterprise/Online).
* Demonstrated ability to automate data and publishing workflows using FME and Python for scalability and performance.
* Demonstratable expertise in spatial visualisation and delivering user-focused, performance-aware web mapping solutions.
Senior Geospatial Content Officer, Digital Atlas of Australia
(Ongoing)
Take a lead role in managing and curating the geospatial content ecosystem for the Digital Atlas of Australia. Oversee the full lifecycle of spatial data, maps, applications and metadata—ensuring accuracy, accessibility and compliance with governance standards. Collaborate with technical experts and stakeholders to maintain content quality, support users, and drive improvements that enhance the Digital Atlas's value for government, industry and the community.
Specific requirements:
* Demonstrated expertise in applying metadata standards and content governance to geospatial datasets and digital platforms.
* Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the application of copyright, privacy, and accessibility obligations relevant to geospatial content and user support.
* Experience administering groups and permissions in ArcGIS Online/Enterprise, and providing responsive support to a diverse user base.
