Property lawyer – senior associate / special counsel

Canberra
ALRA | Australia’s Leading Recruitment Agency
Compliance Director
Posted: 10 May
Offer description

Seeking 5 + years PAE. Work consists of a broad range of residential, commercial and leasing matters.

* Own a ready-made property and commercial practice with full autonomy and support
* Supported by an efficient, independent conveyancing team that runs smoothly
* Flexible, pragmatic hours and billables built for sustainable careers

When demand rises, sensible firms don’t overcomplicate the response. They appoint capable people, back them properly, and then have the discipline to let them get on with it. That’s precisely the opportunity here.

This is a role for an experienced Property & Commercial lawyer who wants more than a seat at the table. A Partner has made a conscious decision to concentrate on niche work, creating a genuine transfer of the firm’s core property and commercial practice. The work is there, the clients are there, and the mandate is clear: take ownership, shape the practice, and build on it with the confidence that comes from real support not supervision for its own sake.

The practice itself is broad and commercially relevant residential, commercial and leasing matters across ACT and NSW. You’ll be backed by a capable conveyancing team that functions as it should: efficiently and independently. That means your time is spent where it adds value on clients, strategy and growth not on process for process’s sake. This is not a role requiring repair; it’s a well-functioning practice ready to be taken forward.

Flexibility here isn’t a slogan. It’s applied with a degree of pragmatism that reflects reality. Billables, hours and hybrid arrangements are calibrated to the individual, with expectations set at a level that’s both commercially sound and sustainable. The firm understands that longevity in a career is built on consistency, not exhaustion.

The culture is equally grounded. Many in the team have young families, and the environment reflects that supportive, but not indulgent. There’s a rhythm to the year: social events, family days, and the occasional moment where the firm pauses entirely to reconnect. At the same time, there’s a clear encouragement to build your own profile, develop networks, and contribute to the firm’s broader growth.

It’s a firm with history, certainly, but not one that’s stuck in it. The structure is lean, the approach is contemporary, and progression is there for those who demonstrate they can take responsibility and deliver. In short, it’s an opportunity to step into something that already works and make it your own.
