The Honourable Sonya Kilkenny MP, Attorney-General, seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as a magistrate in the state of Victoria.

This is not a board position. Magistrates are appointed by the Governor in Council, on the advice of the Attorney-General.

Expressions of interest are sought from individuals with substantial legal experience and knowledge of the jurisdiction of the Magistrates' Court and/or the Children's Court, demonstrating high integrity, sound judgement, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and the ability to conduct hearings. Qualifications and conditions are outlined in the Magistrates' Court Act 1989.

Who we're looking for

Practitioners with experience in family violence, criminal law, and/or Children's Court proceedings are strongly encouraged to apply.

Following appointment, Magistrates assigned to the Magistrates' Court will commence at Melbourne Magistrates' Court and may be assigned elsewhere as needed. Magistrates for the Children's Court will be assigned by the President of the Children's Court in consultation with the Chief Magistrate. Magistrates are required to serve at a regional Court for at least two years.
