Primary objective
To provide the Northern Territory Government, its Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal services with respect to civil
litigation matters.
Context statement
The Litigation Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of civil litigation, criminal, quasi-criminal and
administrative law matters to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. This position is in the Law
Enforcement team, which is tasked with providing advice and representation in matters which have a particular criminal, quasi-criminal or
regulatory aspect, including: regulatory breaches/prosecutions, professional disciplinary hearings, liquor licensing matters, mental
impairment and unfitness to plead hearings, criminal property forfeiture, serious sex offender and domestic violence applications and other
related work as allocated.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and legal representation on major, complex or sensitive matters and report to Director of the Division on the
progress of matters.
1. Supervise allocated legal staff to ensure that matters they are working on are conducted in a timely, efficient and professional way.
2. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
3. Provide a high level of service to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other materials.
4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare, and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly and
correctly.
1. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional manner.
2. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
3. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.
4. Provide case management for complex and sensitive outsourced matters.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
1. Extensive quality experience in litigation practice, including handling matters at all stages in courts and tribunals.
2. Extensive experience in the interpretation and application of legislation.
3. Experience in advocacy in lower courts, tribunals and higher courts (including in appeals).
4. Experience in the preparation and delivery of legal advice on a wide range of matters of a complex and sensitive nature.
5. Proven experience in the organisation and management of a personal legal practice involving complex matters.
6. Experience in negotiating effectively and communicating in a professional manner.
7. Experience as a Team Leader and in the mentoring and supervision of junior legal staff.
Desirable
1. Experience using knowledge of Territory laws and the workings of Government.
1. Complementary degree, Master or post graduate qualification in an area of legal specialisation.
