The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer to provide a critical role at Beechworth Correctional Centre.

About the Business Unit

Beechworth Correctional Centre is a minimum-security facility with a focus on preparing the men with necessary skills needed to achieve successful outcomes and reintegration. Beechworth offers various working industries, providing opportunity to gain knowledge and skills that will effectively link them to employment post release. When not engaged in employment, the men in our care attend rehabilitative programs to address their offending behaviour, engage in education and visits with many also engaging in recreation and community assistance programs.

The prison's primary purpose is the reintegration and preparedness of people in our care for transition to release. Beechworth Correctional Centre is made up of ten separate industries & services: Farm, Horticulture, Landmate, Kitchen, Metal Fabrication, Timber, Grounds & Gardens, Community Teams, Warehouse & Recycling, and Maintenance where there is a strong focus on employment training, and work readiness.

About the Role

Reporting to the Industry Supervisor, the Industry Officers are responsible for management and delivery of specific outcomes within prisons industries under the guidance of a Prison Industry Supervisor. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate people in our care.

This role is focused on the Kitchen area but may include working across other industries areas as required.

Industry Officers assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OH&S legislative requirements and compliance with industry procedures. This includes conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing the people in our care's behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information, and preparing reports.

An Industry Officer plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing, and reviewing practice and procedures relating to the recently released Corrections Practice Framework.

Some of your duties will include:

* Supervise achievement of commercial production targets and customer expectations.
* Actively identify, refer, and support prisoners' participation in integrated education into prisoner employment.
* Leads a team including prisoners working in the kitchen and cafe
* Develop, review, and maintain menus that meet dietary requirements and ensure Food Act (Act) 1984 and Australia and New Zealand food standards code (ANZFSC) compliance
* Ensure security, Occupational Health and Safety and food safety compliance is adhered to.
* Participate in offender management practice, procedures, and the implementation of new initiatives, particularly related to the integration of training in industry

About you

* Qualification or experience relevant to the food service industry.
* The successful applicant will be required to complete Prison Officer Pre Service Training on commencement if not previously completed. Training normally runs over an 8 week period and may require travel to a different location.
* Highly developed communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
* Flexible and open to learning new skills as the necessity to rotate and support other prison industries as the business needs demand is a requirement of the role.
* As some of our Industries operate 7 days a week, Industry Officers may be required to work across a 7-day roster.
