As a Graduate Meteorologist, you will be employed with the Bureau of Meteorology (the Bureau) and work alongside the best minds in Australia whilst completing a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology. The Bureau of Meteorology are the only Australian education provider to offer an internationally recognised Graduate Diploma in Meteorology that meets the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standard.
With our training and support, you will be equipped with the qualification and skills to be part of the next generation of meteorologists at the Bureau.
Entering the program as a full-time, ongoing employee with the Bureau, you will complete a 10-month intensive training course. At the Bureau Meteorological Training Centre in Melbourne, you'll study:

* synoptic-scale meteorology
* mesoscale meteorology
* weather services and procedures.
On successful completion of the training, you will transition into one of our operational centres, developing knowledge as you work with our expert meteorologists.

The Graduate Meteorologist Program provides a Graduate Diploma in Meteorology, a globally recognised qualification that equips you with the skills and capabilities to become part of the next generation of Meteorologists at the Bureau.
Stage 1
As a Graduate Meteorologist, you will commence your career by undertaking a paid, ten-month Graduate Diploma in Meteorology at the Bureau’s Training Centre at 700 Collins Street Docklands, Melbourne. The program runs from mid-January to mid-November, with standard working hours of 8.30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
Graduates are supported through:
* Structured training, learning, and development opportunities to build technical and operational capability.
* Access to a comprehensive mentoring and support network, providing exposure to the day-to-day responsibilities of an operational meteorologist and insights into the Bureau’s strategic priorities.
* Rigorous assessments to ensure retention of meteorological practice
Stage 2
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be qualified as an entry-level Meteorologist. Following this, you will undertake an eight-month job-readiness program as an operational Meteorologist at one or more of the Bureau’s operational sites. These sites are located either in capital cities or at Australian Defence Force (ADF) bases in regional areas.
Flexibility and mobility are essential. A willingness to relocate and accept operational meteorologist roles across Australia is a key component of your training and professional development.
Relocation to operational sites after completing the course is an inherent requirement of the role and forms part of the ongoing probation period. All Graduate Meteorologists are expected to embrace this process as an integral step in building their meteorology career.
The Bureau will cover relocation expenses in accordance with its Relocation and Related Matters Procedure.
Stage 3
Once you have met the performance expectations of an operational Meteorologist, you will assume greater responsibility and independence. You will continue to receive close supervision while engaging in opportunities for on-the-job development in both operational and non-operational roles, gaining experience across multiple disciplines and business areas within the Bureau.
Following successful completion of your probation period, your posting will transition into your ongoing role with the Bureau.
Please note that 24-hour rostering and shift work is an inherent requirement (essential and expected requirements) of the operational Meteorologist role. Shifts will include day, evening, and night rotations, depending on the operational area.

* An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in science, engineering or other field with relevant studies in physics to first year level, and applied mathematics to second year level.

* Applicants that studied overseas should refer to the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition website before applying.
* Some positions include a condition of employment that applicants will successfully undergo a security clearance vetting process, and obtain, and maintain, the requisite security clearance for the duration of their employment with the Bureau. Participants may be offered an opportunity to commence the security clearance vetting process prior to completion of the graduate program.
