About the role
AEMO's Systems Engineering Group is responsible for keeping the power system technically capable of supporting Australia's energy transition. These responsibilities include performing technical analysis, assessing future system needs, integrating and enabling distributed energy resources, identifying capability gaps, developing operational solutions and procuring system services, supporting long‐term technical planning, and collaborating with stakeholders.
The transition in the energy market requires continued connection of large quantities of new generation and storage. Over 55 GW of capacity is in AEMO's connections pipeline. As a technical leader, you will review the connections pipeline, identify upcoming challenges, and assist Operations in developing solutions.
What you will be doing
* Provide advice on the impact of large generation, storage and load connections on power system security and operations, including remedial action and special protection schemes.
* Ensure effective handover of connection projects to ongoing operation, confirming completeness and accuracy of information and transition into operational systems.
* Work with the NEM Onboarding and Connections team to progress projects from assessment to commissioning, coordinating with Operations Planning on commissioning issues.
* Oversee forums and processes to collate, summarise and adjudicate Operations division views on connection activity and provide input to reform initiatives.
* Support process improvement with the Operations Technology and Reform program.
What you will bring to the role
* Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, with significant experience in power systems engineering, preferably related to generator connection or operations.
* Chartered (CPEng/RPEng) or actively working toward professional engineering accreditation.
* Experience with complex power system security and operational issues, producing practical solutions to high impact problems.
* Experience commissioning grid‐connected resources such as generation, battery energy storage, and data centre loads.
* Experience in power system modelling for planning, operations and connections, and knowledge of NEM connection and alteration processes.
