Performance Improvement Manager
WHS Systems, Assurance & Transformation 12?month contract | Canberra or National | Hybrid available
This is not a business?as?usual role.
This position sits at a critical juncture for a large, complex organisation with a high?risk operating environment.
The mandate
You will lead the redesign and maturation of the WHS management system, assurance framework and supporting processes - ensuring they are:
* Fit for purpose in a complex, distributed environment
* Aligned to international standards
* Digitally enabled, practical and usable
* Capable of driving real cultural change, not just compliance
This is a systems and assurance leadership role, not a procedural writing exercise. Your value will come from your ability to cut through complexity, bring people with you, and translate risk, standards and data into simple, workable processes.
What you’ll be accountable for
* Redesigning the WHS management system, audit framework and assurance approach to align with contemporary standards (including international benchmarks)
* Simplifying highly convoluted processes while maintaining rigour in a high?risk operating context
* Leading the transition from an existing digital WHS platform, working with vendors and internal stakeholders to ensure the system enables, rather than constrains, good practice
* Using data, insights and feedback loops to continuously refine and strengthen the system
* Establishing governance, measures and maturity indicators that support assurance at scale
* Partnering closely with operational leaders, specialists and regulators to ensure credibility, confidence and practicality
* Leading and stabilising a small specialist team through change, fatigue and transition
You will be highly visible. This role involves deep consultation, influence and engagement across the organisation. The system will not be rebuilt from behind a desk.
The team and environment
You will lead a small, technically capable team across auditing, systems and specialist risk areas. The team has experienced significant change and interim leadership and will benefit from clarity, direction and a clear end?state.
The broader function includes operational WHS, injury management and claims — this role is deliberately focused on systems, governance, assurance and performance improvement.
What we’re looking for
We are open?minded about background, but experience matters here.
You are likely to bring:
* Demonstrated experience redesigning or uplifting WHS, quality or risk management systems in complex, high?risk environments
* Strong understanding of assurance, audit programs and management system maturity
* Experience working with digital WHS or GRC platforms (hands?on configuration not essential, but system ownership and oversight is)
* The ability to translate standards and regulatory requirements into clear, usable, human?centred processes
* Confidence engaging with regulators, auditors and senior stakeholders
* A calm, credible presence that helps teams move beyond change fatigue
While experience in large, complex organisation is helpful for navigating governance and internal customers, the technical depth may equally come from complex industry (e.g. infrastructure, resources, energy, defence, healthcare or similar).
Ways of working
* Hybrid working is supported (generally two days working from home where it works operationally)
* Canberra?based preferred, but strong national candidates will be considered
Why this role stands out
This is a rare opportunity to reshape the spine of a safety system; to leave behind something that works better than what existed before, and to do so with executive sponsorship and a clear mandate for change.
The contract is available as a labour hire contract ideally, but special considerations may be given to the perfect candidate who prefers a fixed-term contract.
Apply today by uploading your CV along with a cover letter detailing your specific experience managing large-scale WHS redesign and delivery.
