About Our Role
We are looking for an experienced Principal Infrastructure Engineer with a strong background in on‑premise environments to join our IT operations team. This role is responsible for the design, deployment, management, and support of critical infrastructure systems—including servers, virtualization platforms, networking, storage, and compute resources hosted within on‑site data centres or co‑located facilities.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain, monitor, and optimise SUBCO's on‑premises server environments (compute, storage, networking) supporting critical systems that underpin international submarine cable operations.
* Implement security hardening, patching, and lifecycle management of physical and virtual server assets.
* Administer identity and access management systems for on‑premises environments.
* Optimise infrastructure costs and manage budgets effectively. Manage hardware lifecycle including refresh cycles and end‑of‑life equipment planning.
* Lead automation of provisioning, configuration, and patching using infrastructure‑as‑code and orchestration tools.
* Design, deploy, and manage AWS infrastructure aligned with SUBCO's network technology platforms, ensuring scalability, resilience, and compliance.
* Support the design and deployment of cloud infrastructure using IaC.
Reliability & Operations Support
* Implement monitoring of system health, alerting, and observability across on‑prem and cloud environments to ensure high availability of critical digital infrastructure.
* Troubleshoot and resolve incidents impacting SUBCO's operational systems, collaborating closely with the NOC and network engineering teams, including participation in on‑call rotation.
* Ensure backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans are in place and tested.
* Conduct performance tuning and optimisation of infrastructure components.
Security & Compliance
* Ensure security standards, access controls, and compliance frameworks are applied consistently across hybrid infrastructure.
* Support audits, disaster recovery testing, and cyber‑resilience initiatives critical for a trusted subsea operator.
* Work closely with security teams to ensure compliance with internal and external regulations.
* Lead or contribute to infrastructure projects and communicate technical concepts to stakeholders.
* Partner with network engineers, software developers, and operations teams to deliver infrastructure that supports automation, orchestration, and AI/analytics initiatives.
* Evaluate and adopt new technologies to improve performance, reduce cost, and increase efficiency in a hybrid cloud/server environment.
* Automate infrastructure operations using configuration management and scripting tools.
* Manage vendor relationships and support contracts for hardware and software.
* Maintain detailed documentation of systems, configurations, and procedures.
* Contribute to hybrid infrastructure solutions spanning both on‑premises and cloud environments.
* Follow change management processes and industry best practices.
About You
* Experience in Infrastructure or Systems Engineering, with strong background in managing physical/virtual servers, storage, networking, and hardware lifecycles.
* Proficient in virtualization (VMware, Hyper‑V, KVM, Nutanix), container platforms, and orchestration technologies.
* Skilled in designing, deploying, and managing AWS cloud infrastructure, hybrid environments, and Infrastructure‑as‑Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
* Strong Linux/Windows command‑line, automation, and configuration management (Ansible, Puppet, PowerShell); experience with CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins).
* Knowledge of databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle), identity management (Active Directory, LDAP, federation), and enterprise networking (firewalls, load balancers, VLANs, VPNs, direct connect).
* Familiarity with SAN/NAS storage (NetApp, Dell EMC, Synology), backup/recovery, clustering, high‑availability, and disaster recovery planning.
* Experienced in monitoring and observability (Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, Nagios) and performance/capacity planning.
* Strong understanding of IT security best practices, compliance, and operating in secure or regulated environments (finance, defence, healthcare).
* Skilled in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, change management (ITIL), and leading/contributing to infrastructure projects.
* Strong communication skills for both technical and non‑technical stakeholders; comfortable with on‑call support.
* Industry certifications (e.g., VMware VCP, RHCE, MCSE, CompTIA Server+/Network+) highly regarded.
