The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Strategic Advisor to provide a critical role at Western Plains Correctional Centre.

About the Business Unit

Western Plains Correctional Centre is a modern, maximum-security prison focussed on rehabilitation, housing up to 1248 people in custody. Western Plains features multi-purpose infrastructure which is adaptable to the evolving needs of Corrections Victoria and the people in our care. Modern amenities include medical wards, a cultural centre, and vocational training facilities.

Western Plains provides a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to individualised care which motivates, encourages and promotes reintegration into the community. Western Plains has advanced technology which improves security, streamlines operations and enhances connections for the people in our care.

Western Plains operates with three primary service teams: Workforce and Prison Services, Communities, and Safety and Operational Service which collaboratively deliver comprehensive services for people in our care, safety management, and corporate services. Through its innovative design and service model, Western Plains aims to create a thriving environment conducive to safety and positive behavioural change.

About the Role

The Strategic Advisor provides high-level advice and strategic direction to the prison's senior leadership team, addressing issues across the facility. The role involves identifying risks, recommending solutions, and supporting informed decision-making while contributing to the delivery of the location's business plan and projects.

As a key member of the Leadership Team, the Strategic Advisor brings organisational insight that advances departmental strategy and values. Operating in a dynamic environment, the role requires strong stakeholder engagement, sound judgement, and timely action in response to emerging challenges.

Some of your duties will include:

* Provide high level, strategic support to the General Manager to contribute to the safe operations of the facility.
* Provide authoritative advice, guidance and feedback to members of the Leadership Team on work products submitted to the General Manager for approval, including advice on appropriate legislative delegations.
* Initiate the identification and analysis of emerging policy issues, trends and linkages relevant to the correctional setting and provide relevant advice to the General Manager about how to respond to those issues.
* Undertake research and analysis to provide clear advice to the General Manager on issues relating to the management and supervision of those in our care and support the delivery of Corrections Victoria's reform agenda.
* Lead and manage significant projects involving multiple stakeholders to improve operational outcomes.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

* Demonstrated understanding and awareness of key issues impacting the department and the location.
* Proven ability to plan, monitor and deliver complex service development projects within a legislative framework.
* Experience in the preparation of policies, reports and briefs along with highly developed information analysis and conceptual thinking.

Qualifications/requirements

* Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline would be highly regarded.
* Experience working on legislative issues and/or project management that relate to Justice Services is highly desired.
