What you will do as the Financial Accountant
The Legal, Corporate and Information Services Division provides the professional corporate services and information the organisation requires, when they are required, to operate effectively. The Division's remit includes specialised legal services, people and culture, finance and procurement, IT applications and data governance, and corporate reporting and governance functions. The Division also has responsibility for the operation of the energymadeeasy.gov.au website.
The AER Finance, Strategy and Performance Branch supports AER's finances, business partnering and strategic planning, risk management, reporting and procurement services to the AER leadership team and Board. The branch provides secretariat services to the AER Governance Forum and is a strategic partner to support the operations of the AER.
The AER is preparing to become an independent agency, in anticipation of a separation from the ACCC to take effect from 1 July 2026. The branch is developing the capabilities, frameworks, structures, systems, processes, and resources required to deliver our enabling functions as a standalone service for the AER.
We are seeking a high performing Financial Accountant to apply their technical accounting knowledge to activities underpinning the agency's financial statements. The role requires financial analysis and interpretation of accounting standards to ensure the robust preparation of monthly and annual financial statements, general ledger reconciliations, taxation, cash management, asset management functions and contributing to the AER's compliance with Commonwealth finance framework.
Key tasks include:
* Preparing and reviewing monthly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
* Conducting financial analysis and interpreting accounting standards to support robust reporting outcomes.
* Managing general ledger reconciliations, taxation, cash, and asset management activities.
* Contributing to compliance with the Commonwealth financial framework, including AER obligations.
* Experience and demonstrated ability in accounting including contributing to the production of annual financial statements.
* Demonstrated experience in the preparation of complex reconciliations, asset accounting, BAS preparation and FBT.
* Well‐developed analytic thinking and the ability to apply technical accounting knowledge with a proactive approach to problem solving.
* Competency in computerised accounting systems (such as TechnologyOne), and intermediate MS Excel skills.
* Demonstrated ability to effectively engage and work collaboratively with a wide audience of stakeholders, including ability to successfully communicate, influence, negotiate, advise and display excellent corporate enabling services skills.
* Proven ability to deliver project and operational deliverables within deadlines while managing multiple priorities and building capability.
* Proven analytical and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail.
* Qualifications in accounting or similar discipline (or working towards).
The following job specific criteria are also highly desirable:
* CPA/CA professional membership (or working towards).
* Demonstrated ability in accounting within a Commonwealth government environment.
* Competency in Commonwealth Budget Management System (CBMS).
