Workplace Safety and Injury Management Advisor - Helensvale State High School and Miami State High School
Brought by the Queensland Department of Education, this role involves acting as the Workplace Health & Safety Officer across Helensvale and Miami State High Schools. It is a full-time position shared between the two schools, with you working three days at one school and two days at the other, alternating each fortnight.
About The Role
As the Workplace Safety and Injury Management Advisor you will foster a strong safety culture, providing expert advice and guidance on WH&S matters, and ensuring the safety and well-being of every student and staff member. Your focus will include implementing practical safety systems and working closely with Executive teams and HSRs to identify, address and resolve hazards and risks.
Your Responsibilities
Provide advice to management on all matters relating to the prevention of accidents, hazard identification and control, promotion of health and safety, and environmental and risk issues as they relate to students, staff and contractors.
Conduct proactive risk assessments and inspections to identify hazards and unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety conditions and practices.
Develop, promote and coordinate appropriate training on health and safety topics that build awareness and compliance with legislative and departmental requirements.
Maintain effective communication with the Workplace Health and Safety Committee, providing reports and feedback on prevention, risk issues and emergency procedures.
Organise four Workplace Health and Safety Committee meetings per year and perform Secretariat duties for those meetings.
Organise professional development opportunities within the meetings.
Advise on departmental WHS procedures, guidelines and other resources.
Carry out inspections to ensure safe work practices, evaluate safety equipment and chemicals, and develop and implement emergency procedures.
Collate data related to Workplace Health and Safety for internal school reviews.
Develop and implement procedures and processes for Workplace Health and Safety, including risk assessments, to ensure ongoing compliance with the WH&S Program.
Investigate, manage, and report on serious work injuries, work-related illnesses and dangerous events, including oversight of rehabilitation and return-to-work programs.
Maintain knowledge of WH&S legislation and keep up to date with legislative changes.
Skills and Experience
Self-motivated with a genuine passion for promoting a safety-first culture.
Strong understanding of WHS legislation and experience developing, implementing, and monitoring safety systems.
Excellent communication skills, able to collaborate across teams and influence behaviour while providing clear and practical guidance on WHS matters.
