The Opportunity
We're scaling our Product & Engineering organisation and expanding our Sydney hub, and we're looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend depth in Ruby who wants to build, ship, and shape a global SaaS product used and loved by leading law firms around the world.
This role is ideal for someone who naturally gravitates toward systems design, data flows, and backend architecture, but is still comfortable contributing to React/TypeScript when needed to deliver a full experience. You'll work in a cross‑functional squad, partner with Product, Data, and fellow Engineers, and help evolve the reliability, performance, and scalability of Nexl's platform.
We're looking for engineers who bring strong technical foundations, clear thinking, and a high level of ownership – people who raise the bar, embrace AI in their workflow, and enjoy taking complex problems end‑to‑end.
What You'll Own & Do
* Design and build backend services in Ruby on Rails
* Own technical initiatives end‑to‑end, from architecture → delivery → release
* Contribute to frontend work using React/TypeScript where required
* Improve platform performance, reliability, data integrity, and scale
* Collaborate with cross‑functional partners to shape solutions
* Enhance observability, monitoring, and incident response
* Use AI tools to accelerate backend development and documentation
* Mentor engineers and contribute to technical leadership
* Influence platform architecture and backend best practices
What We're Looking For
Must haves:
* Strong experience with Ruby on Rails
* Experience scaling backend systems in production
* Ability to solve complex technical problems independently
* Strong understanding of reliability, APIs, and performance
* Ability to take ownership, operate autonomously, and drive outcomes
* Comfortable designing solutions for ambiguous or complex problems
* Strong collaboration and communication skills across engineering, product, and design
* Understands security best practices and writes secure code (authentication, authorization, data protection)
* Focus on performance and observability, can debug production issues and implement monitoring/alerting
* Growth mindset and a desire to continually raise the bar
* Fluency using AI tools as part of day‑to‑day engineering workflows
Nice to haves
* Experience in multi‑tenant, data‑heavy applications
* Experience with GraphQL, gRPC, or real‑time communication protocols (WebSockets)
* Exposure to AI/LLM application development
* Experience working in cross‑functional squads
* Exposure to React Native or Python
* Familiarity with Marketing Tech, CRM‑like systems, or workflow automation products
* Experience in LegalTech or Professional Services tech
* Knowledge of DevOps practices, Infrastructure as Code or cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure)
* Experience mentoring engineers or influencing engineering culture
* Experience in early‑stage or scale‑up environments
