Journalist - Maternity Fixed Term Contract

Journalists at The Urban Developer are primarily responsible for the production and publishing of professional property journalism that engages the audience, acquires current subscribers and converts new memberships.
Direct Responsibilities
- Media monitoring: Identify potential stories from different channels (PRs, DAs, BCI, ASX, etc) and schedule in the editorial calendar for consideration during the daily editorial meeting.
- Pitching stories: Produce compelling and newsworthy pitches in the daily Editorial WIP for consideration by the News Editor and the Managing Editor.
- Outbound emails: Maintain a regular flow of outbound enquiries via email to investigate what’s happening, identify stories, arrange meetings, develop relationships and stay ahead of the news cycle.
- Outbound calls: Maintain a flow of outbound calls to new prospects to build relationships, understand new developments, discuss key issues, find out key information and gather exclusive stories. 2 calls per day (including a min. 1 x new contact)
- Outbound meetings: Establish a consistent habit of arranging meetings (physical and virtual) with key subjects, informants, influencers and other professionals within the industry to ensure a reliable flow of information that generates exclusive content. 1‑2 meetings per week (including a min. 1 x new contact)
- TUD Style Guide: Checking and adhering to the TUD Style Guide (2023) on an ongoing basis, including pre‑emptively checking, tweaking based on sub‑editor feedback, listening to COS file, etc. Creating positioning, including headlines, eDM intros, seo‑friendly urls and other relevant information in the PubDiary to style, to ensure that the daily eDM is localised, engaging and optimised. 2‑3 times per day based on expected output
- Analytics: Work with the Managing Editor, News Editor and digital team to monitor editorial performance and its influence on news selection.
- Internal communication (Slack): Maintain constant connection to Slack editorial channels to ensure communication with Editors, Sub‑Editors and other journalists is effective and up‑to‑date. Respond within 15 minutes unless notified as ‘away’ or ‘offline’
- Internal communication (Other): Maintain connection to email, mobile phone and other communication channels. Respond within 30 mins (call / text). Respond within 3‑4 hours (email).
- Meeting attendance and involvement: Ensure punctual attendance to all virtual and physical meetings and make a meaningful contribution to the dialogue. Attend on time always (unless previously advised)
- Professionalism: Always ensure that any interaction that you have internally or externally (emails, calls, meetings, events, etc) meets the highest levels of professionalism, alignment to our values and respect for others and the organisation. Punctual, professional, respectful, well‑dressed, positive reflection on the company.
- Industry participation: Grow your personal profile, and the profile of The Urban Developer, through active participation in TUD events, external events, direct networking and industry bodies to ensure TUD is well represented and highly regarded across Australia.
