About ALS
The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) is a proud Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing culturally safe legal and support services across NSW and the ACT. ALS is a fearless advocate for justice, committed to strengthening families, empowering communities, and achieving positive change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
About the Role
This is a hands-on legal role for a senior solicitor who wants to do more than sit behind a desk. As part of ALS’s Aboriginal Child & Family Advocacy Service (ACFAS), you’ll be at the forefront of providing early, culturally appropriate legal support to Aboriginal parents and carers involved in the child protection system.
Based in Dubbo and working across the region, you’ll engage directly with clients, families and communities – providing legal advice, education, representation and referrals. You’ll be a visible and active leader in driving culturally safe legal practice, working side-by-side with community advocates and social workers to keep children connected to family, culture, and Country.
Your work will be critical in reducing the overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in care, and delivering on the recommendations of the Family is Culture review.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver early, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation in care & protection/family law matters
* Actively engage in community legal education and early intervention outreach
* Collaborate closely with ACFAS advocates, social workers and legal teams to provide holistic client support
* Build trust and rapport with Aboriginal clients through trauma-informed, respectful communication
* Contribute to legal reform, reporting, and systemic advocacy aligned with ACFAS priorities
* Maintain professional files, court representation, and ensure compliance with ALS policies
* Travel to Moree and surrounding towns to provide localised, accessible support
About You
You’re someone who:
* Believes in walking with clients, not just speaking for them
* Has deep respect for Aboriginal communities, values, and culture
* Thrives in a fast-paced, people-first legal environment
* Is confident managing complex legal matters while building strong community partnerships
You’ll also bring:
* Current NSW Practising Certificate and a minimum 4 years' experience in Care & Protection/Family Law
* Strong knowledge of care proceedings, legislation, and child protection systems
* Excellent communication, legal reasoning, and time management skills
* A valid NSW Driver’s Licence and the ability to travel throughout regional NSW
