About the unit

Committee Research Officers work within the Committees business unit, one of three business units in the Department.

The Committees business unit provides research, procedural advice and secretariat support to Legislative Assembly-administered committees to fulfil their functions of legislative, policy and fiscal scrutiny and to facilitate the conduct of parliamentary committee work.

Committees increase public awareness and debate on issues under consideration by Parliament. They benefit the community by reviewing proposed laws, facilitating more informed policy-making and ensuring greater government accountability.

The unit is also passionate about the public's involvement in parliamentary activities and works to enhance public participation and engagement with the work of the Assembly.

About the positions

The Committee Research Officer's primary purpose is research and analyse complex issues, and prepare inquiry reports, briefing notes, and other materials to assist committees to meet their objectives within tight timeframes. They also research and prepare documentation on procedural matters to support the orderly and efficient conduct of committee proceedings. The work produced by Research Officers plays a key part in supporting committees to achieve their desired outcomes.

Research Officers work in a number of small teams to support different committees. They report directly to a Committee Manager who has responsibility for managing the work of the committee. However, there is also a level of autonomy which requires well developed time management skills and self-motivation.

Committees look into a broad range of issues, and we encourage people with relevant legal, policy or financial experience and qualifications to apply.
