POSITION PURPOSE
1. To provide efficient, effective and professional Carpentry / Joinery work and
maintenance on all BMCC assets, buildings, fixtures, fittings and associated elements
for all Council managed assets while being an interactive member of the Trades Team.
2 Trade qualification in Carpentry / Joinery with a strong commitment to providing high
level customer service. The ability to be flexible in an ever-changing work setting
is critical as is the ability to work successfully as an individual and as part of a dynamic
team along with managing contractors.
3 Ability to respond to call outs and after-hours work

subcontractors, Public, and customers on CSRs
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use of technology and tools for best practice to undertake carpentry works including
maintenance, make safes, construction works and compliance with current relevant
regulations and WH&S; legislation and the National Construction Code. Cooperation
with other trades, assist in successful completion of multi-trade projects.
- Carry out minor maintenance and improvement works in the following associated
building trades but not limited to:
- Wall and floor tiling
- Plasterboard linings
- Laying of floor coverings
- Concreting
- Bricklaying
- Any other construction or maintenance related works
- Coordinate, supervise or work within activities of a small work group including other
staff, laborers, apprentices and temporary staff including sub-contractors.
- Completion of risk assessments and pre starts for each day every work task.
- Document records to ensure all risks are assessed and sub-contractors are working
in accordance with our policies and procedures.
- To research and investigate and provide technical advice to staff as required.
- To comply with all Council policies and procedures.
- To undertake ongoing development and training considered to be appropriate and
necessary for the position and proposed technology changes.
- Utilise councils corporate systems to order materials from internal or external
suppliers, keep records and verification of all purchases.
- Maintain a complete and comprehensive hand tool kit sufficient to carry out required
carpentry duties – power tools will be supplied by BMCC.
- Follow safe work practices in accordance with the WHS Act, Codes of Practice,
BMCCs WHS Management system.
- Work and promote a positive contribution in a team environment.
- Assist in the training of apprentices under the supervision of the Coordinator.
- Prepare accurately and return all necessary paperwork or electronic records in a timely
manner which may be during and at completion of all works.
- To ensure prompt response to all emergencies involving possible danger to staff and
the public.
- To prepare quotations and estimates, in accordance to the services procedures for all
internal and external works as requested.
- To keep and maintain a daily record of all works performed, site risk assessments, all
incidents and accidents that arise including complaints, non-conformances, quality
verification, reworks and job failures in accordance with procedure.
- To adhere to the requirements of Councils policies and procedures in regard to work
place injury and incidents and the reporting of all work related injuries and incidents.
- Provide technical expert advice to internal staff only.
- To support and undertake any reasonable request from the Coordinator, Program
Leader or Manager in relation to work or other duties.
COMMUNICATION
The position will provide specific information to staff and other internal departments as
well as receive and relay information to staff and internal and external departments as
required.
JUDGEMENT & PROBLEM SOLVING
This position is required to remedy the day-to-day problems that arise to ensure successful
completion of this work. The position is also required to work in accordance with various
Council’s policies and procedures. Reporting to and taking direction form Managers,
Program leader and Coordinator. The position requires understanding and interpreting
relevant codes and standards and applying them to work situations for safe, quick and
cost effective remediations.
AUTHORITY
The position will make the day to day operational decisions consistent with Council policies
and protocols and the strategic approach agreed by the Coordinator, Program Leader and
Manager.
SKILL, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES
ESSENTIAL
- Possess a recognised Trade certificate in Carpentry and Joinery
- Possess a contractors or supervisors license
- Proven relevant experience in the Carpentry and Joinery trade and is able to apply
that experience to maintenance of, improvement to and construction of Council assets.
- Experience in a range of general building maintenance procedures.
- Fully conversant with and have commitment to WH&S; and EEO principles and
requirements.
- Able to work individually and as part of a team.
- Demonstrate a flexible approach and be able to readily adapt to change.
- Hold a current NSW drivers license.
- Possess White card (Construction Industry Induction).
- Basic computer and tablet skills with experience in the use of Ipad, spreadsheets, word
processing and other Council applications as required.
- A strong commitment to providing customer service to BMCS and Council standards.
- Sound knowledge and commitment to Quality, Environment and WH&S; systems and
issues relevant to the position.
- Available for after-hours callouts and out of hours work.
DESIRABLE
- Have proven, relevant experience in associated building trade areas, such as:
- Fixing and repairing of wall and ceiling linings;
- Wall and floor tiling;
- Roofing repairs;
- Concreting;
- Glazing; and
- Bricklaying.
- Hold MR / LR drivers license
- Experience in the safe handling and maintenance of explosive power tools, workshop
plant and tools relevant to the trade.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of the code of practice for working around
asbestos.
- Possess elevated work platform certificate.
- Job estimating.
