ROLE IMPACT The Theatre Technician's role is to assist the surgeon and nursing staff with surgical procedures through the provision, operation and maintenance of theatre equipment and the positioning / preparation of patients.
They are responsible for facilitating efficient perioperative processes to ensure the smooth operation and running of the Perioperative Services.
They must ensure equipment and stock are available at all times for the other Perioperative Services staff.
To assist the Surgeon and Nursing Staff with surgical procedures through provision, operation and maintenance of theatre equipment and the positioning / preparation of patients.
To facilitate efficient Perioperative processes and ensure the smooth operation and running of Perioperative Services.
To ensure equipment and stock are available at all times for the other Perioperative Services staff The Theatre Technician prepares the operating theatre for surgeries which includes organising all appropriate large equipment such as diathermy machine, camera towers, operating table with appropriate fittings, positional aids and x-ray trolleys.
This consists of bending, walking, lifting and repetitive arm movements.
Once the theatre is ready for the patient, the Theatre Technician assists with the transportation and transferring the patient by manoeuvring the trolley or bed into the theatre and transferring the patient onto the operating table.
This transfer is completed using either a slide sheet.
The Theatre Technician also assists with the patients positioning for the particular operation.
This involves occasional heavy lifting, pulling and pushing.
When preparing the limbs the Theatre Technician may be required to hold a limb for up to 10 minutes.
This requires the Theatre Technician to hold their arms outstretched for a sustained period of time whilst bending forward and twisting at the trunk, to ensure the area to be operated on remains sterile.
The Theatre Technician also performs perioperative shaves if required.
During the operation the Theatre Technician organises appropriate equipment and is continually keeping the area clean, the theatre technician is required to remain in theatre at all times unless asked/directed by nursing staff to do otherwise.
Once the operation is complete the technician assists with transfers once again and commences cleaning including mopping and disposal of soiled linen, rubbish and biomedical waste.

Responsibility Provide assistance with the positioning of patients and equipment in theatres.
Assist with the preparation of the operating rooms before the commencement of the day's schedule.
Participate in the application of diathermy, calf compression devices, and tourniquets as directed.
Collect positional aides, table fittings and procedural equipment required for the session.
Clean and return these after use.
Reassemble suction units Check, clean and re-stock plaster trolley, tourniquet equipment, diathermy machines and tidy X-ray Trolleys.
Assist with the maintenance, operation and cleaning of camera towers, electrical equipment, microscopes, X ray aprons and other associated equipment as requested.
Cleans the theatre including operating table, equipment and the walls and floor between cases and theatre lists.
Provide assistance with the transport and safe transfer of patients between departments, within the operating suite and to / from other local hospitals if required.
Perform pre-operative shaves as directed by the surgeon or Nurse-in-Charge.
Correctly dispose of soiled linen, rubbish and biomedical waste from the theatre after each case / session.
Courier Perioperative equipment between units, departments and hospitals if required.
Privacy and Confidentiality Ensure patient dignity is maintained by providing adequate clothing / cover at all times.
Maintain confidentiality and ensure that patient information and records are not disclosed or misused in any way.
