The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Clinical Coder to join our Health Information Services (HIS) team at Macquarie University Health. Reporting to the Manager, Health Information Services, you will be responsible for the accurate and timely coding of inpatient healthcare records, supporting hospital funding, performance measurement, research, and effective health service planning.
You will apply your extensive knowledge of ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS, casemix and DRG grouping to code inpatient separations using 3M Codefinder and associated electronic coding resources. Your work is critical to ensuring high-quality clinical data integrity across Macquarie University Health.
This role offers the opportunity to work closely with clinicians, Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDS), billing teams, and health information professionals, while actively contributing to quality improvement initiatives, audit activities, and continuous workflow optimisation within an academically integrated health service.
Key accountabilities include (but are not limited to):
* Accurately classify (code) diseases and procedures for inpatient episodes using 3M Codefinder, ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS, coding authorities and National Coding Standards.
* Achieve individual performance targets, with an indicative workload of 30–35 separations per day, while maintaining high coding accuracy.
* Liaise closely with Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDS) and clinicians to resolve coding queries and clarify documentation to support data integrity.
* Ensure completeness of the medical record by identifying documentation gaps and requesting additional clinical information where required.
* Perform cancer registration in line with reporting requirements.
* Maintain accurate logs of coding issues, reviews, and uncoded episodes using SharePoint, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.
* Actively participate in quality improvement activities, including daily PICQ reviews, internal and external coding audits, and reporting outcomes to the Manager or Clinical Coding Coordinator.
* Monitor, evaluate, and report coding trends, performance metrics, and emerging issues to support continuous improvement.
* Support clinical documentation improvement initiatives and contribute to clinician education where required.
About You
You are an experienced clinical coder with a strong background in a tertiary and/or teaching hospital environment, ideally within the private hospital sector. You bring advanced technical knowledge, strong analytical skills, and exceptional attention to detail, along with the ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
You are confident working both autonomously and collaboratively, communicate effectively with clinicians and stakeholders, and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of clinical data quality and integrity.

Selection Criteria
* Recognised Clinical Coding qualification or degree in Health Information Management / Medical Record Administration (or equivalent competency through experience).
* Minimum 3 years' clinical coding experience in a tertiary and/or teaching hospital environment.
* Experience in a private hospital healthcare setting is highly desirable.
* Extensive working knowledge and application of ICD-10-AM, ACHI, ACS, casemix and DRG grouping.
* Demonstrated understanding of hospital funding models and diagnosis-related groups (DRGs).
* Proven coding accuracy and strong knowledge of clinical documentation standards.
* Experience with computerised patient administration systems and 3M Codefinder.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan, prioritise, and manage workloads effectively.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* High attention to detail, reliability, accountability, and professionalism.
* Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
