Legal Services supports schools and offices across NSW to navigate the law and keep students at the centre of decisions. We are a trusted partner that delivers clear advice, builds capability and strengthens confidence in public education. Our work spans commercial, employment, privacy, discrimination and administrative law, as well as litigation and information access requests.
Requirements
The Manager, Information Access provides strategic and operational advice to the department on obligations under the GIPA Act, FOI Act and related legislation, including other information requests such as subpoenas and Standing Orders. The role co-leads the Right to Access Unit to deliver high-quality customer service, make sound access decisions, and ensure compliance with statutory processing and reporting requirements. The role is responsible for:
1. Providing strategic advice, briefings and reports on the GIPA Act, FOI Act and related legislation to senior executives and the Minister.
2. Determining access applications and preparing decision briefs for senior officers.
3. Representing the department in external reviews before the Information Commissioner and the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
4. Managing the Agency Information Guide, information access case management systems and statutory reporting.
5. Overseeing departmental responses to Legislative Council Standing Order 52 orders and subpoenas.
6. Leading and developing Right to Access Unit staff, including work allocation, capability development and process improvement.
7. Providing training and guidance to staff on information access obligations and legislative compliance.

About You
8. Bring strong and demonstrated knowledge of GIPA, FOI and information access law, with the ability to interpret legislation and apply it to complex and sensitive requests.
9. Advise senior leaders with clear, confident and practical legal advice, translating complex legal issues for diverse audiences.
10. Lead and support a team to deliver high-quality outcomes, fostering a collaborative culture and guiding staff through complex work.
11. Manage complex requests, competing priorities and strict statutory timeframes while maintaining accuracy, sound judgement and attention to detail.
12. Build strong relationships and communicate clearly with internal stakeholders, external agencies and applicants to achieve effective outcomes.
13. Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy and upholding the Department's Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people.
