The Opportunity
The Trees and Urban Forest Team is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Assistant Arborist to join the City Presentation Department. In this hands‐on outdoor role, you will support the delivery of reactive and programmed tree maintenance works across various Moonee Valley streets and parks, contributing to the health, safety and presentation of the city's urban forest.
Working under the direction of the Tree Maintenance Supervisor, you will assist with tree pruning, removals and general arboricultural activities while ensuring safe work practices and high standards of customer service.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain up‐to‐date knowledge of current street and parks tree maintenance practices and associated tools and equipment.
* Ensure the safe and effective operation and maintenance of plant, machinery, tools and equipment.
* Undertake safety and maintenance checks in accordance with set procedures and safe work practices and report defects to Supervisor.
* Record all required operational activities on Council's asset management system "Confirm" using electronic equipment allocated.
* Ensure plant and equipment is used for its intended purpose and operated in a safe manner only by competent operators.
* Implement procedures in place to ensure plant and equipment is maintained according to manufacturer's specifications for maximum preservation and presentation.
* Report the following, where appropriate:
o Any problems relating to the facilities and resources of the Department.
o The status of works, machinery, tools and equipment.
o Any customer request, complaint or inquiry.
Skills & Experience
You will bring demonstrated experience in the safe and effective operation and basic maintenance of plant, machinery and equipment used in street and park tree maintenance, including tools such as chainsaws and chippers. You have a strong safety focus, a good level of physical fitness and agility to undertake manual outdoor tasks, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while contributing positively to shared goals. Sound communication skills, a professional approach when engaging with the public, and a commitment to following procedures and safe work practices are essential.
A current Victorian Medium Rigid Driver's Licence is required, as well as an Elevated Work Platform and Electrical Safety Industry Certificate II.
