Primary objective
Research, develop, implement, monitor and provide advice on strategies designed to improve the health, safety and wellbeing of
all staff and others, in compliance with relevant legislation.
Context statement
The Work Health and Safety unit provides leadership and high-level strategic support towards workplace safety across 153 schools
and diverse work locations geographically dispersed across the Northern Territory. A primary focus of the Work Health and Safety
unit is to ensure an effective Safety Management System is developed, implemented and monitored across all sites supporting
employees, students, contractors, visitors and volunteers.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Proactively research, develop and review whole of department safety management systems, plans and policies, ensuring
information is current, accurate, relevant and accessible.
2. Provide expert advice and guidance to Principals and corporate managers regarding contemporary Work, Health and Safety
practices to ensure organisational and legislative responsibilities are met in individual workplaces, including physical and
psychosocial hazard risks and mitigation.
1. Ability to develop Work, Health and Safety programs for priority risks including managing hazard inspections, internal system
audits, risk assessments, investigations and safety training aligned with key performance targets.
1. Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships within the department, government agencies, relevant stakeholders
2. Provide administrative support and reporting on WHS performance to the Department's Safety Management Committee, as
well as supporting local level Work Health and Safety committees to function effectively.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive knowledge and ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, standards, codes of practice, employment
instructions, policies and procedures.
2. Proven ability to develop and undertake Work, Health and Safety system verification programs such as internal auditing,
inspections, investigations and ability to author executive reports on findings and recommendations.
1. Proven experience in providing strategic safety management advice, excellent oral communication skills including negotiation
and consultation skills to influence senior management, school and corporate leaders and employees.
4. High level conceptual, analytical and risk management skills in Work, Health and Safety including the development and oversight
of work health safety systems, operational risk and corrective action registers.
5. Demonstrate initiative and personal organisational skills to prioritise and plan work within tight timeframes.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in Work, Health and Safety, Auditing or other similar fields.
Further information
The applicant must have, or ability to attain, a current Working with Children Notice Clearance, be prepared to have national police
check and hold or be willing to obtain a current NT driver's licence.
Visits to remote schools may necessitate travel by 4WD vehicle on unsealed roads or light aircraft and include overnight stays in
remote communities.
