Annual Salary: $76,515 to $85,000
Position Overview
The Civil Engineering Technician supports the planning, design, and delivery of residential and commercial construction projects. Working closely with engineers, site supervisors, and project managers, this role involves preparing technical drawings, conducting site inspections, collecting and analyzing field data, and ensuring design specifications align with construction requirements. The technician plays a key role in bridging office-based engineering design and on-site execution.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Documentation
Prepare and update civil engineering drawings, plans, and models using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
Draft site layouts, earthworks plans, drainage systems, driveways, retaining structures, and utility services.
Assist in producing engineering reports, calculations, and technical documents.
Review plans for accuracy, compliance, and constructability.
Interpret work assignment instructions, applying appropriate procedures and selecting equipment.
Site Support & Field Work
Conduct site surveys, measurements, and data collection to support design verification and construction progress.
Inspect civil works such as earthworks, footings, slabs, pavements, stormwater systems, and utilities.
Monitor site conditions and report discrepancies or issues to supervisors.
Perform materials testing (e.g., compaction, concrete sampling) as required.
Estimate material costs and ensure finished works are within specifications, regulations and contract provisions.
Project Coordination
Liaise with engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and local authorities to ensure timely information flow.
Assist in preparing documentation for development approvals, permits, and compliance submissions.
Support project scheduling, procurement, and resource planning.
Maintain accurate project records, logs, and construction documentation.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Ensure all work meets relevant Australian Standards, local council requirements, and project specifications.
Participate in quality assurance inspections and contribute to QA documentation.
Uphold workplace health and safety requirements across all activities.
Identify potential risks or non-compliance issues and propose corrective actions.
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction practices, and surveying techniques.
Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit or similar).
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and construction documents.
Solid understanding of drainage, earthworks, road construction, and site development processes.
Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work on-site in varied conditions and manage multiple tasks.
Qualifications & Experience
Diploma or Certificate IV in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Minimum 1–3 years experience in civil construction, land development, or engineering consulting (residential/commercial preferred).
Experience in surveying tools and equipment (GPS, total station) beneficial.
White Card (mandatory).
Current driver's licence.
