Are you an experienced journalist with skills in print, radio and video or a commitment to learn the skills necessary for the platforms you have not mastered? ABC Tropical North is looking for a rural specialist to join our team as a mid‑career reporter to create compelling and engaging content for local radio (Country Hour and Landline) as well as our digital news platforms and video news and current affair programs (such as 7PM nightly news and 7.30).
As a Rural Reporter based in Mackay you'll be the voice of rural and regional communities from the Whitsundays to Moranbah, creating content that informs, engages and connects audiences. The role involves presenting programs such as the daily Rural Report and sourcing stories that matter to farmers, producers and regional communities and ensuring they reach both local and national audiences.
You'll work closely with ABC teams to share content across multiple platforms and contribute to planning and commissioning new ideas that strengthen ABC's rural coverage.
The Job
* Gather, produce and present rural, mining and primary industry content for radio, digital, video and social media platforms.
* Contribute to planning and commissioning processes to develop new content ideas.
* Engage with local communities to find and tell stories that resonate with audiences.
* Collaborate with ABC teams to share content nationally.

About You
You're passionate about rural issues and have strong editorial skills.
You will
* Have proven experience as a working journalist, preferably with some skills in live presentation and broadcast.
* Have a strong understanding of rural and regional issues and a commitment to diversity in storytelling.
* Be a self‑starter and able to work with limited supervision as part of a small team based in remote locations.
* Have excellent communication skills and be confident building new relationships and nurturing a network of contacts.
* Have a valid driver's licence and a desire to get out of the office to meet people face‑to‑face.
