Primary objective
Provide effective high-level technical and logistical support to the land resource assessment and mapping program.
Context statement
The Land Assessment Branch maps and describes the land resources (landforms, soils and vegetation) of the Northern
Territory. The information underpins strategic land use planning, pastoral and indigenous land management, conservation
and biodiversity programs and agricultural soil and land management.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Ensure a small fleet of four-wheel drive vehicles, mechanical soil coring rigs and other field and communication equipment
is serviced, maintained and repaired as required to ensure safe and efficient field operations.
2. Lead logistical planning for camping based dry season fieldwork operations in remote areas for up to 12 days.
3. As part of a field-based survey team assist with the collection of landform, soil and vegetation data.
4. Collate and secure soil and vegetation field data into corporate soil and vegetation databases.
1. Assist with the compilation of scientific information such as spatial data and technical reports.
2. Work effectively with landholders to garner support and access to land for field operations.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Experience managing mechanical equipment, field apparatus and four-wheel drive vehicles.
1. Demonstrated skills in planning, organising and undertaking field-based programs in small survey teams.
2. An ability to undertake extensive remote dry season camping based fieldwork in a small survey team.
3. Ability to effectively work in small teams that deliver projects within timeframes and budgets.
4. Knowledge of and/or experience using computer systems, including Microsoft products that secure data and support the
compilation of technical and scientific information.
6. Experience effectively communicating with government agencies, land managers and the public.
7. Current manual NT Drivers Licence or equivalent including experience operating a four-wheel drive in off-road
conditions.
Desirable
1. An understanding of and/or experience in natural resource management such as soil, land resource or vegetation
assessment.
