Department of Health – Basic Trainee – Acute Care positions at Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania.
Employment details
Fixed‐term, full‐time day work, 76 hours per fortnight (plus 10 hours protected training time). 12‐month term from 1 February 2027 to 7 February 2028.
Location
Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania.
Responsibilities
* Work six months in Intensive Care and six months in Anaesthesia during the one‐year tenure.
* Provide day and night shift care under supervision of Consultant Intensivists and Senior Registrars.
* Support ICU operations, including a satellite private ICU, and perform duties such as cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, and major surgical patient care.
* Work in the day theatre, day procedure unit, acute pain service, and pre‐admission clinics, including weekend and after‐hours roles as competent.
* Participate in the general registrar pool and similar duties, including rostered overtime.
Qualifications
* Minimum two years full‐time equivalent postgraduate hospital clinical experience in Australia or New Zealand.
* Post‐graduate year 5 or equivalent at entry; candidates in post‐graduate year 6 or higher during 2027 are ineligible.
* General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration.
* Valid, current registration/licences at all times.
* Strong clinical skills, excellent communication, and career interest in Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Remote and Rural Medicine.
Desirable Experience
* University of Tasmania graduates or Tasmanian public hospital employees.
* Previous RMO experience in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine or high‐acuity inpatient services.
* Completion of acute care and resuscitation courses (ALS, BASIC, APLS, EMST) and relevant formal US training.
* Experience in audit, research, teaching, safety and quality, and leadership roles.
Selection Process
Essential requirements are mandatory. Candidates will be selected for interview based on their experience, qualifications, and desired criteria. Interviews will be held in June 2026.
