The City of Marion is seeking expressions of interest from people who wish to be appointed to its Council Assessment Panel (CAP) as Independent Presiding Member (one role) and Independent Member (one roles).

The role of the CAP is to make decisions on development applications. The Independent Members should have a keen interest in urban planning, an extensive knowledge of the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016 and appropriate qualifications and experience relevant to the CAP.

As a guide, it is anticipated that the Independent Members will come from the fields of urban planning, architecture, urban design, transport/mobility, planning law, civil engineering, heritage conservation, or similar. A knowledge of and connection to the City of Marion area is desirable.

Independent Members are required to obtain and maintain accreditation at Planning Level 2 from the Accredited Professionals Scheme for the duration of their term. The costs of obtaining and maintaining accreditation is at the applicant's cost.

The Presiding Member role requires proven skills in chairing meetings and supporting effective governance. The Presiding Member should have a strong understanding of the relevant planning legislation and planning assessment processes, and the ability to lead panel deliberations in a fair, transparent and orderly manner. Applicants should indicate whether they wish to be considered for this role.

Independent members will be compensated for their time and expertise by a meeting sitting fee determined by Council. Appointments will commence in 1 July 2026. Meetings are held at the City of Administration Centre at 6.30pm on the first (and third if required) Wednesday of every month, except January which is the third Wednesday.

Council has appointed a Review and Selection Committee to consider all applications, interview shortlisted candidates and make recommendations for appointment to the Council.
