Our Degree Programme

The 3‐year degree apprenticeship starts at Level 5 and progresses to an integrated Level 6 BEng in Civil Engineering. You will also work toward Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The apprenticeship is delivered at Leeds College of Building using block release, typically five‐week blocks spread across the academic year. The academic start date is January 2027.

Your Role

As a Trainee Civil Engineer you will work from day one with an experienced team on a multi‐million pound project at Devonport. You will learn the technical, organisational and supervisory aspects of construction projects while studying for your degree and receiving site mentoring.

Project Support

* Collaborate with experienced engineers on design, planning and execution of civil engineering projects.
* Communicate effectively at all levels.
* Assist with planning and coordination of site activities.
* Maintain good working relationships with clients, designers, supply chain and others.

Technical Development

* Gain hands‐on experience with engineering tools and processes.
* Learn to use specialist setting‐out equipment.

Problem Solving

* Overcome challenges on live projects.
* Drive quality through effective planning and right‐first‐time delivery.

On‐Site Experience

* Work on real construction projects and apply learning in real‐world scenarios.
* Maintain diaries of site activity.

Safety and Sustainability

* Ensure work is carried out safely in line with company Health and Safety procedures.
* Maintain high personal standards in health and safety.
* Maintain high standards in environmental awareness and behaviour.
* Monitor and record delivery against agreed programme and construction methods.
* Ensure works are accurately set out before work commences.

What You'll Need

Academic Requirements

* GCSE grade 5 (B) or above in Maths.
* GCSE grade 4 (C) or above in English Language.
* 3 additional GCSEs grade 4 and above.
* HNC Civil Engineering, or Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician apprenticeship/Construction Site Engineering Technician.

Due to funding and eligibility requirements, we are unable to accept applications from candidates that have not fully completed an apprenticeship at Level 4 or who are already enrolled on a similar programme at Level 6.

Your team

Be part of a strategically important maritime infrastructure project at Devonport Royal Dockyard, supporting the redevelopment of 10 Dock – a dry‐dock facility critical for sustaining the Royal Navy's submarine fleet. The project includes demolition, reconstruction of support buildings, strengthening dock walls and upgrading services. Sustainability is key, with low‐carbon concrete, lean design principles and material reuse.
