Primary Objectives
Provide high quality financial and accounting services to Members of the Legislative Assembly,
Electorate Officers and Departmental staff including accounts payable, accounts receivable, petty cash,
credit cards, general ledger's journal entries and financial reporting.
Context Statement
The DLA provides the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, its Members and Committees with
quality and timely support for the operation of the Parliament, Parliamentary Committees, the Parliament
House precinct, and Electorate Offices (and staff).
The Finance Unit, which sits within the Corporate and Electorate Support Division, is responsible for
high level strategic advice and services to the DLA's Executive Management, and staff in all areas of
budget financial management and manages all aspects of the DLA's budget, financial and reporting
management.
The unit also manages the travel and fleet functions for Members, Electorate Officers and DLA staff. In
conjunction with other business units, the unit prepares detailed reporting for members on their use of
entitlements. Finance is also responsible for asset tracking and reporting and provides purchasing
services for the Department.
Key Responsibilities
1. Prepare and examine accounts for payment ensuring appropriate cost-centre allocations, tax
compliance and coding, and authorisation.
2. Prepare and raise invoice requisitions for the Agency ensuring appropriate accounting treatment
and then monitor and follow-up debtors as required.
3. Manage petty cash.
1. Advise corporate credit card holders on all accounting and administrative aspects.
2. Prepare journal entries to adjust incorrect ledger postings related to all components of the financial
statements, month end accruals and year end process in accordance with the Australian Accounting
Standards and relevant legislation.
1. Assist in the preparation, review, and analysis of financial statements, budgets and reports in
accordance with Australian Accounting Standards.
1. Provide account reconciliations and general administrative support to the Finance team to ensure
high standard financial service delivery.

Selection Criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated theoretical knowledge and practical experience in applying accounting standards and
practices.
2. Demonstrated analytical and research skills with the ability to investigate financial issues, interpret
data and provide evidence-based recommendations.
3. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
and present complex financial information clearly to senior management and executives.
4. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislation, by-laws, and policy in various contexts and
analytical and research skills.
5. Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills with the ability to deal with
competing priorities and deadlines and a demonstrated high level of attention to detail.
6. Proven ability to work as part of a team and organise own workload to meet deadlines.
7. Demonstrated sound level of experience in computer literacy, including financial and accounting
applications, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in a Finance or Accounting field.
Requirements for Selection and Undertaking the Role
* Prior to being formally offered a position with the Department of the Legislative Assembly, applicants

* Access to recreation leave will be restricted during Parliamentary sitting periods.
* The position is based at Parliament House; however, will require travel throughout the Northern
Territory and interstate at times.
